The battery with the least power will be used first and then the next will be used automatically, while batteries can be switched out without powering off the camera. To keep you up to date the percentage of battery power can be viewed on your camera's Lcd screen.

Another major advantage of this grip is the comfort it brings to you when shooting in the vertical orientation, so you can compose your images in the most suitable way without making allowances or sacrifices. Comfortably placed controls are included on the grip allowing for adjustments to various settings and firing of the camera with minimal effort.
