New Product Announcement - Canon EOS R3

3/06/2021 9:25 am

With Canon’s range of premium full-frame EOS R Mirrorless cameras growing in popularity and stature with each new model, the announcement of a new member is a significant event. The latest announcement is the Canon EOS R3.

Getting to know the EOS R3

While still in production, we already know that this superb mirrorless camera will include a newly developed 35mm full-frame, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor. This sensor will pair up with Canon’s DIGIC X image processor to record brilliant image quality in all lighting conditions, as well as fast-paced performance. This pace refers to operating speeds of the camera, as well as shooting speeds - this camera will be able to shoot up to 30 frames per second in a continuous burst.

A low-light beast, the Canon EOS R3 will focus in incredibly dim conditions (as low as EV-7), while your images will be sharp and blur-free throughout, with up to 8-stops of coordinated IS control (using select RF lenses).

This stacked image sensor is the first of its kind in a Canon camera, and it provides significantly faster read-out speeds as well as far less rolling shutter. To take full advantage of this sensor, users will be able to rely on the Electronic Shutter - this is essential for continuous shooting as well as advanced speedlight shooting.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF will be included in the EOS R3, and we know that this technology will deliver fast and accurate AF performance in a range of conditions. In a first for a Canon camera, the EOS R3 will feature eye-control function, a feature which speeds up the AF process thanks to the AF frame adjusting by the movement of the viewer's eye when looking through the camera’s EVF.

The EOS R3 will be better at tracking moving subjects in general, with face, body, head and eye-detection all available, and it also has a brand new feature that will appeal to sports photographers, vehicle subject recognition!

A rugged, workman-like body

EOS R Mirrorless cameras have always appealed to serious photographers, and the EOS R3 takes this one step further thanks to its premium build quality. This camera is rugged and weather-sealed, and it also includes an integrated battery grip for increased shooting times - this is something we have previously seen in Canon’s pro-level EOS-1 DSLR range.

The Canon EOS R3 is in fact powered by the same high-powered lithium battery that is found in the latest flagship DSLR, the EOS 1DX III, and it features three primary input dials so those coming to the R3 from an EOS-1 background will find operating the camera very easy.

A modern take on a pro-level camera body

As a sign of the times, the Canon EOS R3 is a pro-level Mirrorless camera that doesn’t just excell as a still photography tool, it is also great for capturing high-quality videos. 4K Video with Canon Log3 will be available, as well as oversampled 4K, and RAW movie internal recording. Notably, AF tracking for people, animals and even vehicles will be possible when shooting video with the EOS R3.

Canon understands that connection is key to the success of the modern photographer's wokflow. For enhanced flexibility, both wired and wireless connections will be available with the EOS R3, thanks to it including Wired LAN and 5GHz Wi-Fi. Just think of the speeds at which you can shoot, create, edit and share with the Canon EOS R3 mirrorless camera.
