For full explorations into shallow depths of field, you need a lens with a bright maximum aperture, such as this Nikon 58mm f1.4 lens. This large aperture of this lens is perfect for throwing backgrounds into a complete blur, while these blurry areas, or bokeh, are of the most beautiful and dream-like in quality, thanks to the 9 rounded-blade aperture diaphragm. As for the focal length, 58mm finds the middle ground between standard and telephoto, which is ideal for creating a natural perspective and is perfect for documentary-style shooting and for portraiture. When mounted on DX-format cameras this focal length translates to an equivalent of 87mm, which creates an even tighter crop and allows you to maintain a greater distance between you and your model.
