It features an ultra-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture for outstanding performance in low-light and available-light conditions, an 11-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth, cinematic bokeh, and a full-frame image circle. Its optical construction of 14 elements in 11 groups incorporates two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements and two GMo aspherical elements, working alongside Canon's Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to suppress chromatic aberration, distortion, ghosting, and flare for exceptional clarity and colour fidelity.

What sets this lens apart is its dual-motor autofocus system, combining a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) for fast, high-thrust rear focus actuation with a Nano USM for quick, whisper-quiet floating lens group movement — delivering rapid, precise, and virtually silent autofocus ideal for both stills and video. The lens is purpose-built for hybrid shooting, featuring a stepless iris (aperture) ring with an Auto Mode position and iris lock switch for smooth, flicker-free exposure changes during video capture, plus a customisable front control ring and dedicated AF/MF switch.
