New for the E-mount, the longest lens in the lineup
An exciting prospects for all Sony E-Mount users, particularly those with an interest in Sports and Wildlife photographers, is this FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens, the longest in the lineup so far. This lens is full-frame compatible and it can also be shot on APS-C format E-Mount cameras and in conjunction with Sony Teleconverters for an increase on the already long zoom range.
The 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 features a Direct Drive SSM focus motor, which leads to fast, accurate and silent AF performance. This focus motor has all the characteristics that you would want, able to efficiently detect your subject and lock into focus, track your subject as it moves and allow you to fire, all at a undetectable volume, which is great for maintaining discretion and filming videos.
Just like the E-Mount range that it is part of, this lens manages to perform all of these tasks whilst remaining lightweight and portable. Sony are playing to its strengths here, developing a lenses that is amongst the smallest of its type, without you having to sacrifice on quality and performance. Dust and moisture resistant construction allows you to shoot undeterred as the weather conditions worsen, while fluorine coating has been applied to the front of the lens, so you can easily remove any dust and grime that may become lodged.
Image quality is where this lens really comes into its own, delivering a consistently good quality and edge to edge sharpness. This high-quality performance is thanks to the premium optical design, which contains 22 elements in 16 groups. Including in these elements is 1 Super-ED and 2 ED glass elements, which along with delivering maximum resolution, control the appearance of chromatic aberrations. Out of focus areas are rendered beautifully, while Sony's Nano AR coating is in place to reduce ghosting and flare.
