Perfect for exploring the more detailed manual shooting styles of the DSLR world, or for sticking to the easier auto-shooting modes, the Nikon D5100 is a great first toe in the water for beginners. Image performance is excellent, with a 16MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processor on loan from the higher-end D7000, while the build of the camera is lighter and more compact to be better suited to those coming from a compact camera background. Full HD resolution video is available for capture, benefiting from full time AF, while the 3-inch vari-angle LCD screen is suitable for these lovers of video, or for those shooting at more intricate and inventive angles.
- 16.2MP APS-C Sensor
- 3-inch Vari-angle LCD screen
- 11-point AF
- Full HD Video
- 4FPS Continuous shooting

Stock levels may vary from advertised. If your ordered item is unavailable, Ted's will provide a full refund or exchange.
Featuring the same 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processor of the higher-end D7000, the entry-level Nikon D5100 comes with pre-ordained expectations in terms of image quality. Physically, however, the two cameras are quite different, the D5100 featuring a more lightweight and compact build, which will appeal to the beginner making their first DSLR purchase. The previously mentioned combo of sensor and processor produce stunning images under all lighting conditions, with a noticeable lack of noise visible throughout the native 100-6400 ISO range. Also available as a result of these interior features, is the recording of Full HD video, which is well supported by the inclusion of full-time AF, with subject tracking even capable of tracking a moving object as it makes its way across the frame.
As well as the tried and true optical viewfinder that is a favourite of most DSLR shooters, the Nikon D5100 includes a 3-inch LCD screen, which is of the vari-angle kind. This flexible screen will allow you to put your camera in tricky positions and still compose effectively, and it is also useful for Handycam like shooting when accessing the Full HD Video. Users will be able to leave their own unique mark on their photos and videos with the D5100, thanks to the inclusion of numerous special effects, which are easy to use and can be seen in effect, in real time.
