This is an archived product announcement, originally published in February 2018 at the time of the Sony A7 III's launch. The camera has since been succeeded by the Sony A7 IV.
Building on Sony's market-leading position in the full-frame mirrorless segment, the Sony A7 Mark III represented a significant step forward for the A7 series at the time of its release. Combining technologies inherited from the flagship Sony A9 and A7R III, the A7 III was designed to be the definitive all-rounder — capable enough for professionals, accessible enough for enthusiasts.
New 24.2MP Back-Illuminated Sensor
At the heart of the A7 III is a 24.2MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor, delivering increased sensitivity, outstanding resolution, and an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities. The back-illuminated design allows more light to reach each pixel, resulting in cleaner images across a wide ISO range.
Speed & Autofocus
The A7 III offers 10fps continuous shooting with either the mechanical or silent electronic shutter, making it a capable tool for action and sports photography. Its autofocus system covers 93% of the image area, with fast and accurate subject acquisition across a wide range of conditions.
Video Capabilities
Diverse 4K HDR video capabilities made the A7 III a compelling hybrid camera at launch, with features that appealed equally to videographers and photographers looking to expand their creative output.
Build & Handling
The A7 III carried forward several features from Sony's higher-end models, including a Z-series battery for extended shooting sessions, dual memory card slots for flexible file management, and a joystick for intuitive AF point adjustment.
