This is an archived product announcement, originally published in April 2020 during the Canon EOS R5's development phase. The camera has since launched and is available through Ted's Cameras.
Canon's announcement of the EOS R5 marked a defining moment for the EOS R mirrorless system. Positioned as a flagship hybrid camera for professional photographers and videographers, the R5 delivered a feature set that set new benchmarks for full-frame mirrorless cameras at the time of its release.
8K Video Recording
The EOS R5 was the first Canon camera to offer internal 8K RAW video recording, uncropped, at up to 30p — with full Dual Pixel CMOS AF support across all 8K modes. For those working in 4K, the R5 delivers uncropped 4K at up to 120p internally, along with 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265) and 4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265) recording options.
Advanced Subject Detection AF
The EOS R5 features Canon's advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF with deep-learning subject recognition, capable of detecting and tracking people, dogs, cats, and birds. The system can lock onto eyes, faces, and bodies with precision — even for animal subjects — making it a highly capable tool for wildlife, portrait, and action photography.
In-Body Image Stabilisation
A first for Canon, the EOS R5 includes a 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system that works in coordination with the optical stabilisation built into compatible RF and EF lenses (via adapter), delivering a level of combined stabilisation performance previously unavailable in the EOS lineup.
Refined 5 Series Design
True to its 5 Series heritage, the EOS R5 features dual card slots — one CFexpress and one SD UHS-II — a rear control wheel, and an AF joystick. The familiar ergonomics make it an intuitive transition for photographers coming from Canon's EOS 5D series DSLRs.
Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connects the EOS R5 to Canon's image.canon cloud service, enabling automatic image transfer for seamless shooting, editing, and sharing on the move.
