New Product Announcement - Canon EOS R3

This is an archived product announcement, originally published in June 2021 ahead of the Canon EOS R3's release. The camera has since launched and is available through Ted's Cameras.

With Canon's full-frame EOS R mirrorless lineup growing in both popularity and capability, the announcement of the EOS R3 was a significant moment for the brand. Positioned as Canon's pro-level mirrorless flagship, the R3 brought a host of firsts to the EOS R system.

Getting to Know the EOS R3

At the heart of the Canon EOS R3 is a newly developed 35mm full-frame, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor, paired with Canon's DIGIC X image processor. Together, they deliver exceptional image quality across all lighting conditions and support a continuous burst rate of up to 30 frames per second. Low-light performance is equally impressive, with autofocus capable of operating down to EV-7, and up to 8 stops of coordinated IS control available when using select RF lenses.

The stacked sensor architecture — a first for Canon — provides significantly faster read-out speeds and greatly reduced rolling shutter, making the Electronic Shutter a genuinely practical tool for continuous and advanced speedlight shooting.

Improvements to Autofocus

Dual Pixel CMOS AF powers the R3's autofocus system, delivering fast and accurate performance across a wide range of conditions. The headline addition is Eye Control AF — a first for any Canon camera — which adjusts the AF frame based on the movement of the photographer's eye as they look through the EVF, dramatically speeding up subject acquisition. Face, body, head, and eye detection are all available, alongside a new vehicle subject recognition mode that makes the R3 a compelling option for motorsport and action photographers.

A Rugged, Professional Build

The EOS R3 features a premium, weather-sealed body with an integrated battery grip — a design cue borrowed from Canon's pro-level EOS-1 DSLR range. It is powered by the same high-capacity lithium battery found in the EOS-1D X Mark III, and its three primary input dials and ergonomic button layout will feel immediately familiar to photographers transitioning from Canon's flagship DSLRs.

Pro-Level Video Capability

The EOS R3 is as capable behind a video as it is shooting stills. 4K recording with Canon Log 3 is supported, along with oversampled 4K and internal RAW movie recording. Subject tracking for people, animals, and vehicles carries over seamlessly into video mode, making the R3 a versatile tool for hybrid shooters.

Connectivity is equally well considered, with both Wired LAN and 5GHz Wi-Fi built in — ensuring fast, flexible file transfer for professionals working to tight deadlines.
