Nikon Lens Formats

Nikon has evolved their autofocus technology significantly over the years. Here are the abbreviations you'll commonly see on their lenses:
AF — Autofocus. Used since Nikon's first generation of AF lenses.
AF-S — Autofocus with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor — fast, quiet, and well suited to general-purpose and action photography.
AF-D — Autofocus with distance information, used to assist metering and exposure calculations.

Nikon Optical Technology Explained
AS / ASP — Aspherical lens elements, which reduce distortion in wide-angle lenses and minimise aberrations.
ASED — Aspherical ED glass — combining two of Nikon's best optical technologies in a single element.
Arneo — Nikon's Arneo anti-reflective coating, which reduces ghosting and lens flare.
ED — Extra-low Dispersion glass. Reduces chromatic aberrations and delivers excellent image sharpness by minimising the dispersion of light as it passes through the lens.
Super ED — An advanced version of Nikon's ED glass, offering even greater control over chromatic aberrations.
HRI — High Refractive Index elements. Reduces curvature and spherical aberrations while allowing for a more compact lens design, as each element can do the work of several conventional elements.
FL — Fluorite lens elements. Provides impressive optical performance — particularly effective at reducing chromatic aberrations at longer focal lengths — while remaining smaller and lighter than traditional glass.
F / Fluorine — Fluorine coating applied to the front element. Repels dust, water, and grease, and makes the element significantly easier to clean.
SR — Short-wavelength Refractive elements. Delivers compact, lightweight construction with strong optical performance, compensating for chromatic aberrations caused by short-wavelength light.
N — Nano Crystal Coat. Dramatically reduces internal reflections, virtually eliminating ghosting.
PF — Phase Fresnel glass. Compensates for chromatic aberration using the photon diffraction phenomenon, enabling a more compact lens design.
SIC — Super Integrated Coating. Reduces flare and ghosting while improving colour accuracy and contrast.
STM — Stepping Motor (also known as a pulse motor). Responsive, quick, and whisper-quiet — ideal for video recording.
SWM — Silent Wave Motor. Fast and accurate autofocus, well suited to general-purpose photography as well as faster subjects like wildlife and sport.
VR — Vibration Reduction. Nikon's optical image stabilisation system, which corrects camera shake for sharper handheld images.
VR II — The updated version of Nikon's Vibration Reduction system, offering improved stabilisation performance.

Are NIKKOR Lenses Good?
NIKKOR is Nikon's own lens brand, and the short answer is yes — NIKKOR lenses are widely regarded as some of the best optics available for both hobbyist and professional photographers. The NIKKOR name has been around since 1933, and Nikon's modern Z-mount NIKKOR lenses in particular represent a significant leap in optical performance, taking advantage of the Z mount's wider diameter and shorter flange distance. What Does AF-S Mean on a Nikon Lens?
AF-S stands for Auto Focus Silent Wave Motor. It's one of the most common letter codes you'll find on Nikon F-mount DSLR lenses, and it means the lens has a built-in autofocus motor that operates quietly and quickly — making it ideal for both stills and video. AF-S lenses don't rely on the camera body's autofocus motor to drive focus, which is important because some entry-level Nikon DSLR bodies (like the D3500) don't have a built-in AF motor at all. If you own one of those cameras, an AF-S lens is essential for autofocus to work. On Z-mount mirrorless lenses, Nikon uses a different internal drive system, so you won't see the AF-S designation on newer NIKKOR Z glass.
Are All Nikon Lenses F Mount?
No — not all Nikon lenses are F mount. Nikon currently has two active lens mounts: the F mount for DSLR cameras, and the Z mount for mirrorless cameras. F-mount lenses have been around since 1959 and cover Nikon's extensive DSLR range, including the D3500, D7500, and D850. Z-mount lenses are newer and designed exclusively for Nikon's mirrorless Z-series bodies such as the Z5 II, Z6 III, and Z8. The good news is that F-mount lenses can be used on Z-mount cameras via Nikon's FTZ II adapter, giving you access to Nikon's full back catalogue. However, native Z-mount lenses will always deliver the best performance on a Z-series body.
