Its retrofocus Distagon optical architecture delivers consistent sharpness from corner to corner, with floating elements and anomalous partial dispersion glass working together to control field curvature and chromatic aberration. Every optical surface carries Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings, maximising contrast and colour accuracy while keeping flare and ghosting firmly in check.

Featuring a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture and a smooth nine-blade diaphragm, this lens gathers light efficiently and renders out-of-focus areas with pleasing character. The ZF.2 electronic CPU interface communicates fully with modern Nikon DSLRs, enabling auto-exposure metering, EXIF metadata recording, and in-camera focus confirmation. Precision manual focus mechanics, an engraved depth-of-field scale, and a close focus distance of just 0.22 metres make it a versatile choice for landscape, architectural, interior, and astrophotography work.
