Monopods

Monopods

While a standard tripod is great for those carefully considered shots where you can pause to make small adjustments and finesse your framing, there are times when you need some extra support for speedier shooting; that's where a monopod can help. Monopods are a worthwhile addition to any kit, but they are more often found in the possession of professional sports photographers and wildlife photographers.

Monopods feature just one leg, which you may have guessed from the name, so you can't set your camera on a monopod and take a step back to survey your surroundings. What these handy accessories do allow is blur-free shots at slower shutter speeds than what you would usually attempt hands-free, and as they are lightweight and easy to carry, this makes them incredibly valuable to your photography kit.

As we mentioned, monopods are ideal for fast-paced shooting. Due to one having one leg, they are much quicker to adjust to the required height. Up top, a monopod will usually feature a standard tripod mount or a ballhead. Both of these options are again suited to quick shooting, as you either don't have the option to pan and tilt or in the case of the ballhead, all of your compositional adjustments can be made simultaneously.

Not sure yet if a monopod or a tripod is perfect for you? Both of these items get a mention in our tripod buying guide that you can read here, so head on over to find out everything you need to know before making your purchase.
