Hi I'm James and welcome to Get Teducated.

It's coming up to the time of year where people are looking at gifts for the enthusiast photographer in their life, so here's a few tips to get you started.

Photography is all about light, so flash units are usually a great gift option as they can help take indoor, portrait, and product photography to the next level. An external flash unit will give a photographer much greater control over the lighting of a scene, allowing them to use diffusers to soften the output or modify the colour temperature of the lighting. I usually recommend the mid-range flash units like the Canon Speedlite 430EX III or Nikon Speedlight SB700 as they provide enough power for most users, and have the added versatility to be used as part of a wireless lighting setup just by purchasing additional flash units later on.

Spare batteries are always a good idea as well, because there's nothing worse than having your shoot end abruptly with a dead battery. Aside from offering a range of reliable third-party battery options, Hahnel make the most convenient charger I've ever seen - the Hahnel Pro Cube, which comes in a few variations to suit the most common batteries. The Pro Cube allows you to charge 2 camera batteries at the same time, either directly from mains power or in the car, PLUS, it can charge a set of 4 AA batteries for your flash, just by sitting a plate on top. Not to mention it's got a 2.1A USB output for the extra convenience of fast charging your phone or tablet while you're on the job.

Speaking of very handy accessories from Hahnel, they also do the Giga T Pro wireless timer remote. These have a couple of advantages over the cheaper wireless remotes from Canon and Nikon. For starters, unlike the other wireless remotes which use infra red, the same as what you use for your TV, the Giga T Pro uses RF which allows it to operate at distances up to 100 metres without the need for line of sight. It's also more intelligent, giving you more options for self-timer, as well as allowing you set up an interval timer for time lapse photography, a long exposure timer to set a precise shutter speed in bulb mode, or program in a combination of those settings.

A 50mm lens is an essential part of any enthusiast kit. Commonly used as a portrait style lens, both Canon and Nikon offer some great options at price points to suit any budget, but the Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART is THE lens to have. Being a Sigma, build quality is a given, and should satisfy even the more discerning photographers. More importantly though optical quality is outstanding, delivering beautifully sharp images even at it's widest aperture setting and only gets better as you stop it down, where it can maintain it's sharpness all the way out to the edges of the frame.

Enthusiast photographers can be understandably picky about their gear, so if you're not confident choosing, a Ted's Gift Card to go towards their next purchase may be the way to go!

That's all for now!
