Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto lenses are the chosen lens of sports and wildlife photographers, in particular. These lenses provide a longer field of view than your average lens, which allows you to get a tighter crop of distant objects, without physically having to get too close. This is perfect for sports, where you are limited in how close you can get, and for wildlife photography, as getting too close can sometimes be hazardous or can spook your prospective subjects.

A telephoto lens is often described as having a focal length of 85mm or more, with different ranges of telephoto focal lengths being separated into the groups short-telephoto, medium-telephoto and super-telephoto. These lenses can come in either prime or zoom designs, with the choice between using a prime or zoom lens being a personal one for individual photographers.

The best wildlife lens is usually a telephoto lens but you still need to learn the ins and outs of your DSLR or mirrorless camera and plenty of practice to achieve success. Our photography blog is there to help you out on your journey, with gear advice and recommendations, as well as expert advice, such as choosing a telephoto lens for your camera.
