In the morning we leave Lilydale Airport and fly in our very
comfortably appointed PC12 Turboprop aircraft, to Arkaroola in the
Flinders ranges South Australia. Everybody has a window seat and will be
able to watch the green of coastal Australia change to the reds and
blue-greens of the inland. On our descent into Arkaroola airstrip we fly
over the amazing Lake Frome, a very large salt lake, so large in fact,
that NASA use it to set the white balance for their cameras and
instruments from space. After check-in and lunch we will take the famous
Arkaroola Ridgetop Tour in a four wheel drive, with a guide who will fill
us in on the surrounding flora, fauna and geology. This drive takes us
deep into this amazing, ruggedly beautiful, mountain country, culminating
in a cuppa right at the top of the ranges while taking in the stunning
panoramic views. At dusk we arrive back at Arkaroola for dinner.
The next morning, after shooting at dawn, and breakfast, a short hop to
Leigh Creek for fuel will afford us some great low-level photography of
the Flinders Ranges in the early light. We then fly up to Birdsville (past
Lake Eyre) for The Birdsville Races, the Melbourne Cup of the outback, a
modern-day spectacle of horses, racing, dust and lots and lots of outback
people. This will provide us with many wonderful photographic
On the second afternoon when we’ve had our fill of the hurly burly of the
races, we fly South, to the little village of Innamincka on the Cooper
Creek. The Innamincka Hotel will provide us with top quality accommodation
and food in this scenic little 1 pub and 5 house town.
On the third morning after an optional dawn shoot and a
leisurely breakfast, we fly 5 min down the creek to the “Dig Tree” – the
actual tree under which the famous Australian explorers Burke & Wills
expired while waiting for a very late rescue party.
Next stop, the opal mining town of White Cliffs for a barbecue lunch and
some exploration, after which we board our aircraft for the final leg
