Had a provious Camcorder with a tape and it was a lot of messing around. This Sony is just a delight. So compact but the video quality is awesome. I love the wide angle of the lens. Also the quality of the photos it takes is unbelievable, I'm so happy with it.

The Sony Handycam HDR-CX700V - A magic all round camera.

The HDR-CX700V produces superb quality output whether this be motion video or still frames. The unit is light, compact and easy to use. Time to first shot from a cold start is impressive. The only caveat on this is the inbuilt GPS which takes some time to locate sufficient satellites to obtain an accurate location fix. By default, video and pics are tagged with the last used location until such time as a new one is determined.

The large fold out touchscreen works well in a variety of lighting conditions and is supplemented perfectly by a smaller single eye viewfinder with focus adjustment for those times when high glare makes use of a fold out screen viewfinder impractical.

The menu system contains options and functions to suit the most demanding of users, wishing to control almost every aspect of the camera's operation. However, for most mere mortals, the default settings will be more than adequate to cover just about every shooting situation. The low light shooting mode for video is particularly good and magic for things like faces illuminated by birthday candles.

Most all in one and DSLR still cameras these days do an acceptable job of taking video, but clearly are better and happier operating in their normal space taking still shots. The same cannot be said for the HDR-CX700V which seems to have a genuine split personality. For a camera designed primarily for video, it takes some very fine still shots. Add to this neat functions like "Smile Shutter" which detects smiling faces during video shooting and simultaneously takes still frames without any intervention needed by the operator and you have one very smart solution for capturing those special moments. You may need no other camera. This unit although pricey is well worth the investment.
