You can shoot rich, vibrant, expressive shots in wide perspective and capture every detail with the Lumix LX5’s low distortion, high-resolution Leica lens. With a 24 mm wide-angle and 3.8x optical zoom you can capture over 200% more image than a standard 35 mm lens.
The 10.1 megapixel high sensitivity CCD brings an unprecedented image quality to this compact camera. This leading edge technology enables the Lumix LX5 to capture incredibly sharp, high-resolution and noiseless images even in low lighting situations. Images can also be shot in any of the three aspect ratios (4:3, 3:2 or 16:9.) and with the lens set anywhere from 24 mm to 90 mm.
The Lumix LX5’s Intelligent Resolution technology automatically detects and optimises key areas within both still and moving images. The result - image resolution is vastly improved and pictures are consistently crisp and clear.
The Intelligent Zoom also extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x while still maintaining image quality, even when combined with digital zoom (a 3.8x optical can virtually extend to 5x equivalent.)
Not only can the Lumix LX5 record HD movies in AVCHD Lite with quality Dolby Digital sound. (AVCHD almost doubles the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format), but it also has Creator Motion JPEG format (1,280 x 720 pixels). To start shooting, simply press the Motion Picture button.
Panasonic’s acclaimed iA mode can also be used for movies, or you can quickly switch to Creative Movie mode if you want to take control of the shutter speed and aperture yourself.
With its smooth, intuitive “jog dial” and focus switch handily located on the lens barrel, the Lumix LX5 is a breeze to manually control. When you feel the need to get creative, dynamic customised colour effects are easily achieved in My Colour mode and Film mode. Its big, bright, 460,000-dot high res 3.0 inch LCD screen means you can compose, assess, adjust, choose and experiment while you’re shooting, just like a pro.
If that’s not enough to satisfy your creative needs, take your pick from a wide range of optional accessories including view finders, filters and external flashes.
Connect your Lumix LX5 to your Panasonic VIErA TV via a mini HDMI cable, and you can use the TV's remote control to play your stills and movies on the big screen.

It takes great photos in low light (without flash). The images are sharp and natural. It allows manual as well as automatic mode. The widescreen is great too. I'm also impressed with the video quality. It's the best compact camera that allows almost SLR capabilities. But more compact than an SLR. I love it for travel and to take shots/video of my kids at their school events. If you like the qualities of an SLR but do not want to bulk, then this camera is for you.

An ideal compromise between large digital SLRs and small compacts without the weight and bulk. Speed, aperture and exposure control give SLR qualities in a compact light weight camera, easily carried a in a shirt pocket. Good battery life and Image quality combined with compact size and light weight make for an ideal travel camera. The only down side is limited (3x optical) zoom.

Really good for macro photos with the aperture open. Great compact general use camera as well. No problems with battery life so far. Definitely recommend it as a general use camera, but particularly for close up shots, even when the lighting is not optimal.

Impressive with the mix of picture quality and features. Sharpness and definition is someway above average. The ultra wide angled lens is great for landscape and architectural photography. I like some nice touches in the design & build quality of the DMC LX3. The HD movies are good, though you cannot zoom once capture has started. DMC LX3 has a full selection of manual features giving me great control over my photos. I can use the joystick to control various features including manual focusing. DMC LX3 is designed for easy, creative shooting and high performance in low-light conditions which I wanted from a camera of my choice. Aperture F/2 gives you the opportunity to use fast shutter speeds to capture clear, blur-free images in low light conditions. If I shoot at lower resolutions, the 2.5x optical zoom can be increased to a maximum of 4.5x. I scored macro 9/10 as the DMC LX3 has a high quality lens suited for close up shots. I would say that the DMC LX3 is ideal for a creative photography or someone looking for a smaller camera with a wide range of features. Two cons that I can think of are: 1)noise shows up quite clearly, so keep ISO 800 and lower in any situation. 2)Silly lens cap is a pain to remove every time you use the DMC LX3. Love and enjoy using this camera :-)
