New Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor — the high optical performance of NIKKOR lenses maximizes the advantage of high pixel count [NEW]
The new Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor (35.9 x 24.0 mm) with 24.3 effective megapixels delivers stable high image quality at a wide ISO sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 50 to 25600 equivalent) utilizing large pixel pitch. You can enjoy large and beautiful bokeh effects that only the FX format with its large-size image plane can offer, and 14-bit A/D conversion and a high signal-to-noise ratio deliver images with rich tonal gradation and reduced noise. Combined with its high resolution, this achieves high-quality images that can be enlarged or cropped. And what maximizes the advantage of this high resolution is the NIKKOR lenses that deliver superior optical performance. The vast array of the FX lens lineup makes a wide variety of photographic expression possible. In movie shooting, the abundant data from 24.3 megapixels produces full HD movies with high definition.
Nikon's Integrated Dust Reduction System with Image Sensor Cleaning function
Nikon's comprehensive dust reduction measures are realized by repeating thorough tests to respond to the demands of photographers. The D600 employs an Image Sensor Cleaning function that vibrates the optical low-pass filter at four different resonant frequencies to reduce dust. This function can be set to operate automatically when the camera is turned on or off, or to manual using menu. Moreover, Nikon takes extra measures to prevent dust spoiling images, such as operating certain parts prior to body assembly so as not to disperse dust after mounting within the camera, and reducing or deleting any spots with optional software.
Image-processing engine EXPEED 3, the same as used for the D4 and D800 series, realizes superior high-speed processing performance
The D600 incorporates image-processing engine EXPEED 3, optimized for digital SLRs, the same as the D4, D800 series. It processes data of 24.3 effective megapixels at high speed. The D600's EXPEED 3 is excellent at color reproduction, gradation processing and image quality at high sensitivity. It reduces color phase shift and reproduces human skin tone more faithfully. Color reproduction in Active D-Lighting is also improved. Furthermore, from image processing and SD card recording to image playback and image transfer, EXPEED 3 manages massive amounts of data at high speed. Even with specialized processing features like Active D-Lighting and high ISO noise reduction, continuous shooting speed is not sacrificed and the impact to the number of shots in continuous shooting is minimized. EXPEED 3 supports Full HD D-Movie of 1,920 x 1,080; 30p. It is possible to record movies with minimized noise while maintaining resolution even at high ISO settings using the noise reduction function designed for movies.
14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image processing for rich tones
The D600 achieves reproduction of rich tonal gradation by 16-bit image processing of the digital signal resulting from 14-bit A/D conversion within the image sensor. Gradation in highlight areas, which can be hard to reproduce, is rendered smoothly.
Lateral chromatic aberration reduction/auto distortion control/vignette control that support sharp resolution even in peripheral areas
Unlike other correction methods that simply eliminate the colors of chromatic aberration, Nikon's lateral chromatic aberration reduction compensates for the differences in the resolving sizes of each color. This proves especially effective for reducing image distortion at the edges of a frame and for improving image quality throughout the entire frame, regardless of the NIKKOR lenses used. If you set "On" for "Auto distortion control" when using G or D lenses*1, barrel distortion caused by a wide-angle lens or pin-cushion distortion caused by a telephoto lens can be compensated. Also, it employs "Vignette control*2" that reduces the drop in brightness at the edges of a photograph caused by characteristics of the lens.
*1PC, fisheye, and certain other lenses excluded.
*2DX and PC lenses excluded.
Wide ISO sensitivity range ISO 100 to 6400* at normal setting that handles various degrees of brightness
The D600's ISO sensitivity, that clears Nikon's severe test conditions, ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 at normal setting. Under harsh lighting conditions, it is possible to expand to ISO 50 (Lo 1) or ISO 25600 (Hi 2) equivalent. The D600's large FX-format CMOS sensor responds to a variety of lighting situations such as the harsh glare of the midday sun, the low light of dusk, a dimly lit interior and night scenes. Also, the superior noise reduction function reduces noise effectively at high ISO setting, and suppresses noise even for low-contrast subjects such as hair and grass textures while maintaining resolution as much as possible. This excellent high ISO sensitivity performance is powerfully effective even in movie recording.

Using Nikon since 1983 and always using Nikon! Have waited for a right weight full frame machine for a while. Now Nikon's D600 provides what I need in my photography but in the right weight. All of the features are marvelous in such small and light weight body. It is a nice camera for daily use.

My D600 is a quick easy to use for any occasion, or you can take your time and fine tune the many useful features the camera offers. Goes with my set of FX lenses and now operates with RAW 7.3 giving more control over quality images.
Overall a sharp camera, great build quality and I'm glad I purchased the camera in Australia. These cameras will hold their value for quite a while.

The D600 is my first full frame camera and it is taking a while to extend my skills to the capabilities of the camera. Love many of its features, such as: dual card slots (already saved me once when the first card was left in my computer), mode dial lock to prevent accidental wrong settings, time lapse. It is only a little bigger and heavier than my D90 so goes most places with me.

A quality full-frame camera. Handles very well with good lenses (24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8) - better balanced than my old D90. Would like to have more focus points but not a major limitation. Bulk is easy to handle with the BlackRapid RS-Sport strap but you need to constantly check the hook gate to ensure it is secure.

I've had the d600 for about a month now, and whilst I haven't used it in anger overseas yet, I have nothing to complain about, it's superb in low light & overall works brilliantly.
being my first true DSLR i still sometimes grab the sony NEX or X100 on my way out instead of lugging a huge back of gear around, but if I want to do the job properly, this camera is the business.

Overall an excellent camera that competes with the pro lines on everything except frame rate, however please be aware of an internal sensor issue where dust and blade oil is being spattered on the sensor. It is a real problem known with the d600. Supposedly doesnt stop till around 10000 shutter activations. This was frustrating as a camera at this price shouldn't be virtually unusable after 60 shots requiring an expensive sensor clean. Approx 90aud each time.

I had the D600 for a month or more now, and it is one of the best I have used. Nikon is more of a manual type than Canon, because of the buttons that you will need to adjust the settings of the camera. However, if you get used to it, there isn't any problem at all. I think the lens is one of the more important one, having a good quality lens will provide better quality photograph. I am using the 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, which is pretty nice. The weight is more than 1KG, probably 2KG in total with lens and battery. For a long duration on the neck of hand, it will be pretty painful although this is the lightest and smaller DSLR Full Frame in the market, but comparing to the others, this camera should be able to get you to hold for another hour or so. The battery life is very good, I usually can use it for 2 days just for shooting photographs, however video will use up more of the battery. The body is quite solid, and it should last for 5 or more years. If you would like to see some samples, you can go to www.melbournephotograph.com or https://www.facebook.com/DCPhotograph

I've had a D600 for a month now and shot both professional and fun stuff on it.
Firstly, there IS a dust issue but if you know how to carefully clean the sensor you'll be fine.
The AF system is also a little centre dominant but like the rest of the camera, extremely fast.
On the plus side - the image quality is great - clean colours, great tonal range and way sharper than a D800 (nicer colour too). Nikon have removed a few of the preferences but the important stuff is still there. There's no sync socket, but hey - who uses them anyway?
Noise wise it's similar but maybe not quite as good as my D700. I also have a D3s which walks all over it but is soooo much heavier.
So if you want a compact, lightweight, full frame camera with 90% of those professional features you're looking for - this is your camera.
BTW I used a D800 and prefer the D600 as it is way better in terms of noise, sharpness and of course colour balance. Now, if Nikon could make a D600 in a D800 casing - that'd be great...

I just bought this baby 3 days ago and I gotta tell you this thing is a cracker! Valued only at $2,499, it is exceptional and oustanding for its level. It can produce stunning pictures in most conditions and is capable of capturing sharp and detailed images even at 6400 ISO! The build is good, although not as solid like the D4 or the D800. However, you trade all the excess weight for such a compact and versatile camera, so personally I think it's worth it. D600 might only be targeted at semi-professionals and serious enthusiasts, but I reckon it is the best gadget even for a world-class photographer. This machine possesses all the features you need, and most of all it can produce the best images! Definitely worth the money and a 5/5 for me.
