The D3100 is equipped with the D-Movie function that enables recording of high-definition movies (with monaural sound) by simply pressing the movie-record button. Movies can be recorded with the same aperture and other settings applied in Guide mode. In addition, the camera also offers an AF-F focus mode for movie recording. When AF-F mode is enabled, the camera focuses continuously during movie recording removing the need for holding the shutter-release button down halfway. The D3100 also offers in-camera movie editing functions that allow users to save a single frame as a still image or delete unnecessary portions from the beginning or end of movie files.
Nikon has developed a new DX-format CMOS image sensor offering an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels. The new sensor enables the D3100 to produce high-resolution images with outstanding enlargement capability. The camera makes the most of its normal ISO sensitivity up to 3200. For added shooting versatility, the camera’s Hi 2 setting increases sensitivity to ISO 12800.
The D3100 is equipped with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED 2 image processing system. The leading-edge technology of the original EXPEED system has been refined, maximising the camera’s power to process the large amounts of data generated by the D3100’s 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor. EXPEED 2 meets the demands of the D3100’s advanced imaging functions, suppressing noise in still images and movies, while reproducing excellent resolution, long tonal scale and vivid colour range.
Guide mode has been refined to make most camera operations even easier, from shooting to image playback and editing to the application of camera settings, regardless of the user's skill level.
Assist images:The D3100 displays assist images that show the effect of various camera settings, giving users an idea of the results they can expect with specified settings, prior to taking the shot.
Other new functions built into Guide mode:
1. Selection from 3 shooting techniques: “Use the viewfinder," “Use live view,” “Shoot movies”
2. “Bring more into focus” and “Show water flowing” options have been added to the “Advanced operation” menu for shooting
3. “Movie settings,” “HDMI,” “Flicker reduction” and “Eye-Fi upload”* options have been added to the “Set Up” menu for applying basic camera settings
* Only available when compatible Eye-Fi memory card is inserted
Nikon’s versatile Live View shooting, can be accessed with one-touch ease by simply rotating the live view switch. This makes shooting feel more like shooting with a compact digital camera, easing the transition to digital-SLR for beginners. In addition, various information such as the shooting mode, time remaining (movie mode) and battery indicator can be shown in the live view display.
The D3100 is equipped with the scene auto selector function. When live view mode is enabled in Auto or Auto (flash off) mode, the camera automatically analyzes the scene and selects the appropriate shooting mode from Portrait, Landscape, Close up or Night portrait.* This function allows users to achieve the intended images while leaving all settings up to the camera. *Scene auto selector is disabled with manual focusing.
Equipped with a face detection function capable of detecting up to 35 human faces (D3000: up to 5 faces)
Operation has been improved with the addition of an independent movie-record button and release-mode selector. In addition, the rubber grip provides a better fit.
Equipped with a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) bus that enables remote control playback of images and movies recorded with the camera when the camera is connected to a high-definition TV
Equipped with a new exposure compensation algorithm for greater flexibility and performance with NEF (RAW) processing
The new ViewNX 2 software is bundled with the D3100

I'm very happy with this camera. It takes good clear images, even in low light. It's relatively easy to learn to use. However, don't buy it for its video function - doesn't produce good videos at all.

I have used other camera's for many years in my position as an International Agricultural consultant. Believe me, taking close up pics is tricky, The Nikkon camera that i purchased is head and shoulders above the rest.
Long view shots are precise and so clear.as well. To say that i am satisfied is an understatement.

Bought this camera for taking pics of the family, as our point and shoot camera just wasn't giving us the sharpness I wanted. This camera is so easy to use and the pics are amazing. The button layout makes sense, and the tune-ablity is great. I can muck around with the settings or just put it in auto and shoot away.
You will not be disappointed for your first DSLR. Read the reviews, and you will see that this Nikon comes out trumps over all others in the price range!

I have had digital Cameras for some time now but wanted that " bit more " to play with. The DSLR Nikon D3100 camera offered just that, with easy to understand instructions and a lot of bells and whistles to allow me to experiment with my photography. Highly recommend to anyone looking for that 'little extra out of their photos" It is bulky but this is what you would expect from a camera of this quality.... GO ahead Buy one. .you'll love it! :)

I bought the D3100 as my first DSLR and have enjoyed every single minute of it.
It feels good in the hand, is reasonably light (the plus side to a non-metal body!), and almost all functions are easily within a fingers reach.
I took the advice of those who know and have avoided the Full Auto mode as much as possible and have enjoyed the other modes by achieving great results pretty much straight away (although, there's always plenty of room for creative growth on my part!).
Only two cons: No exposure bracketing (doesn't matter, doing it manually is fine), and the Exposure Lock button is not easy to reach.
Really, this has been a beautiful introduction to the world of DSLRs for me. I have not regretted the purchase for a moment, and I continue to look for opportunities to grab the D3100 out and get creative!

Its a easy transition from my compact to the Nikon D3100. The picture quality is great. I wish i had done it when my kids were younger because it doesn't have the delay that the compacts have, so you will catch that special moment which children don't like to stay still and they move so quick. It's very easy to also use the movie mode, which is great for holidays instead of taking a video camera. I've showed friends and they couldn't believe the difference, my sister in law is great with camera's and she was really impressd with it. I love my new camera it's the best

I do not have any skills as a photographer, but I have taken some excellent photos with the camera within the first week of owning it. In particular, the zoom and focus functions, as well as the speed of the photo being taken even with the flash on, has allowed me to take some excellent closeups.

Being the fifth Nikon we have purchased over time, this one has refined the usability of the model it replaced, the D60. The 3100 gets a high quality camera with two great lenses for under a $1000. We enjoy nature photography, and when a pair of Tawny Frogmouths nested just outside our house, we shot the development of the young as they grew in the nest. The picture quality is staggering considering these birds are masters of disguise. We would highly recommend this camera.

I'm a beginner when it comes to photography, but the D3100 has been a great step into DSLR. All of the auto modes result in amazing shots. Much better than the point and shot digital camera I used to have. Connection to Mac is a piece of cake and fast.
Quality of the camera is outstanding also. All knobs and buttons seem well made. I can see this lasting a long time.
It's inspired me to learn up on the manual modes!
All in all - a great purchase!

The Nikon D3100 is good for people like me, just starting out in photography. The camera is easy to use and has great image quality. The camera has a movie setting on it but the sound quality really isn't that great. i would recommend this camera to anyone that is starting out in photography i would love to take some great photos. The camera is not all good though for example when on auto setting it makes annoying noises when trying to focus. The camera does comes with a strap to put around your neck, although this seems like a great idea the strap comes of the camera very easily, i did experience this once where i had the camera hanging on my neck by the strap when someone knocked me the camera come of its strap but this is really easily fixed with a better strap. I am really enjoying my new camera and i hope you enjoy yours too.

I bought the camera because my old SLR film camera was very dated and I needed a new camera to take overseas on holidays. I bought it duty free, almost exactly one month before we went, at the start of the duty free period. This was important because it gave me some time in Australia to try out the camera, take some photos, upload to the computer, etc. It meant that I could fiddle with the settings and see what worked. I also bought an extra battery and an 16Gb memory stick. This was absolutely essential because it meant that I could take photos all day, no stopping, while I was on holiday. You just recharged the used battery overnight, where you were staying and you were set. On the automatic settings, the Nikon D3100 took great photos. Just make sure that you select for landscape, portraits, etc. as necessary. Oh, and make sure you turn off the flash when travelling through buildings (eg. churchs) so that you don't upset anyone. Don't worry there was plenty of light for photos. Overall, much impressed with the results. The only problem? Sorting through the thousands of great photos when I got home. But someone has to do it.

The Nikon D3100 is a well built, lightweight camera which is easy to use and takes professional-quality photos . It can be used with confidence in "auto" mode by a beginner, yet has sophisticated settings and controls that would please an experienced photographer.
The total camera, lens, filters and bag combination I purchased from Teds was great value for money.

I love this camera. The D3100 is my first DSLR purchase and I did extensive research on various cameras and specs online first. I have never used the guide mode, no need, the camera is so simple to use. The info button on the back takes you straight to what you need on the spot without getting into the menus. With only the 18-55mm kit lens I have taken brilliant close-up shots of seagulls in flight, flowers, self-portraits (with the self-timer) and even gig shots which came out brilliantly at ISO 1600-3200 (mostly spot-metered). Image quality is fabulous, I rarely have need to post-process at size 8"x12" (I use Nikon View NX 2 and an Epson Photo stylus 1270 printer). I leave Auto-D-Lighting on all the time as it renders images the way I see them, ie:- the human eye can see detail in shadows and so can this camera when D-Lighting is set to on. Out of roughly 1000 photos, I have tweaked the contrast, brightness and saturation on a total of four prints. I have not yet used the scene modes. After a brief breaking-in period on Auto, no flash mode, I quickly progressed to A-priority, S-priority and now manual mode. In auto-focus you get to choose your focus point, but I am preferring manual focus on close-ups. If you can get your hands on the D3100 Digital Field Guide then the learning curve will be even easier. I don't use live-view as the optical viewfinder is great and I have only done a five minute movie of my dog. I bought this camera for still shots and it does a great job. No, you cannot borrow my camera, I sleep with it!

Bought this as my first DSLR after going through various reviews and feeling other SLRs. Have always been told to buy a Canon - and I am so glad I didn't. Sure, it didn't come with the limited edition bunch of things, however, Canon was also starting to make me feel bad when I buy their products.
The 3100 is easy to use with all of it's different "modes" so you can learn off any one of those modes without worries. Furthermore, with their "guides" that is onboard the camera itself, any basic queries can be easily answered off the guides, although more complicated ones would require more search.
The "Live View" is clear and awesome, albeit I personally feel I get better feedback through the viewfinder still.
The only draw back is it is built from plastic and sometimes feel like it would squash just from putting it in my bag. However, the battery life and image quality makes up for all this.
Recommend for beginners....

Not bad to get DSLR round about 1000$. So far no problem. But sometimes feel bulky with long FL lens. Reasonal battery life. For image quality, as I haven't use other DSLRs, I don't know. But better than my portable one IXUS 100 though it is not suitable to compare. I never feel regretful to have Nikon.

This is my first SLR camera and i love it totally. Had no idea what I was doing to start but with all the settings for different situations you could take really good photos right from the start. Working my way through the book to learn more. Have had alot of comments on what a lovely picture it takes. Would really reccomend it especially if you are a beginner like me .....

Being new to the dslr market, I was after a solid camera that took great pics, was easy to use, but gave me a few more photographic options to my digital 'point and shoot'. I have not been disappointed with my Nikon d3100. I did a lot of reasearch and was swayed by the price, soild feel and easy to use nature of this camera, plus the video mode. I bought it as we are having a 6 month holiday overseas. I have gone through the manual and played with it a bit. I love the guide mode and the quality of the pictures taken. The sports mode is great for capturing my 3 young kids who are constantly on the go. Overall I would recommend this as a great transition into the dslr market. I still have lots to learn, but 'playing' is easy with this camera and it makes taking a bad shot difficult. Highly recommended.

Love the speed of this camera and the picture quality. The focus is usually great but sometimes it takes a little while to right itself. Also, some menu functions not clear but could be just user needing to take more time to read instructions :-)

When i purchased this camera i was very new to the features of DSLR camera's but the D3100 made my learning very easy and fuss free. it has all the features a budding photographer could need and the ease of use for a casual snapper to achieve beautiful quality photo's and video's. It adapts to people who want to point and shoot or a professional who wants to tinker with all of the settings through a no fuss button layout.
Coming from compact camera's the only thing i really noticed was the size of the unit and how heavy it is compared to compacts but in time i got used to it.
If your in the market for a entry level DSLR than the nikon D3100 is the way to go.

This camera is easy to use on auto mode and easily takes great photos. I am yet to use it on manual. The camera is a good size and easy to carry around especially if you get a bag for it. We take it on all our trips and it's been the best camera I have purchased.

I haven't yet explored all the features of this camera, but I love it. I can take good photos very easily, the screen is clear, no problems with the flash, the battery seems to have a great shelf life.

Love this camera, very happy with my purchase. Easy to use and takes great, clear photos. It is a bit bulky on outings with the case and additional lens.
I am very disappointed with the included software in the package (ViewNX 2). It is far too complicated and I find it difficult to navigate. I use the software from my previous Canon camera for all photo management, it is much more user friendly.

This is my first SLR & I am very happy with it so far. I haven't completely mastered it yet but on automatic setting I am getting some wonderful results. The camera is easy to use, light & well made. My only reservation is that there is no cable with the camera to transfer photos directly to my Apple Notebook.

My camera is my favourite possession. It's something I wanted for a long time, and now I feel lost when I leave the house without it. It's easy to use, and the pictures it takes always look gorgeous and professional. It's also pretty tough - the first thing my mum did when she had a look at it was drop the lens - it bounced, but didn't break! Of course, now I'm much more careful, and I don't let anyone hold it without putting the strap around their neck first!

I bought this camera to take photos of my new twins and whilst its easy to point and shoot sometimes it takes a while to come into focus, but the added extra of having a video on it is fantastic ! I'm a Nikon user for 20 years and love the quality of the photos that are in focus !

As a nobody in the camera world this camera has really made it easy for me to capture all my family moments. The size is amazing and the quality of the images blow my mind compared to my standard digital camera. All the features of this camera come in handy to someone with no knowledge of photography. This camera has given me a lot of insight to taking an actual photo and has enhanced my interest to photography. Nikon. Now I'm Keen On Nikon

Great camera for any beginner. Takes awesome pictures.
I got a 18-70 plus a 70-300 for that extra zoom but sometimes I found it a bit annoying to have to change lenses. If I would buy again I would go for one 18-270 lense instead.

This is my first D-SLR camera and its one of the best entry level cameras from the ones that i have seen. Its great value for money and easy to use. Just from the quick start guide, you can get great photos. The weight of it is surprisingly small and the size is also good as its very compact. The image quality is also great with the highest resolution photos being around 13 Mb. Also the 1080p video is great for any occasion.
As said in the previous review, one downside is that there is no external microphone input but its a fairly minor problem and again it might be better to go for the canon 550D if video is one of your main priorities.
Overall its a fantastic d-slr camera and highly recommended.

The Nikon D3100 is a fantastic camera if you are looking to buy your first DSLR, its cheap and also very well featured. I think the only aspect of it which I was disappointed about is the fact that you cannot use Auto Bracketing, but thats a fairly minor problem and its still incredible value for the money
if you are looking to use the video mode more so than the still photography side you may want to consider the Cannon equivalent due to the fact that it has some extra features such as the external microphone socket.
