The F1.8 lens is a perfect match for the Back-illuminated CMOS Sensor. You’ll be able to record in low light environments with confidence. Record indoors or outside in darker situations with brilliant results. Record birthdays, weddings, sporting events and everyday life without the need for additional lighting.
When recording in HD, you get up to 40x optical zoom - the industry's highest level. When recording in Standard Definition, the Dynamic Zoom function uses nearly all of the effective pixels of the CMOS to achieve up to 70x magnification without any degradation of picture quality.
Time-Lapse REC records one frame at a time at set intervals (1sec.–80sec.). So you can watch movement that's hours long in just a few seconds when played back. It's great when you want to observe an event that takes place over a long period of time or to record unique-looking scenes in a creative way.
When a subject enters the detecting area and the luminance changes, recording starts automatically. Recording continues as long as there is movement within the area and automatically stops after 5 seconds of no movement. You can use it like a surveillance camera or to observe something. Discover new ways to use the camera.
Wherever you point the camera, it instantaneously analyzes faces, brightness, color and distance, to automatically select the best settings for the scene. Brightness, sharpness, chroma and gamma values, and more, are all continuously optimized. Get the best possible shot, anytime!
Camera-shake compensation is another important feature of a video camera. Our Advanced Image Stabilizer (A.I.S.) expands the effective area at wide angle, delivering powerful compensation for camera shake. Now, you can enjoy stable results even if you're trotting alongside your subject.
Record in AVCHD Lite if you want to watch the results on an HDTV or burn videos to a Blu-ray disc or DVD. In addition you can record in Standard Definition to edit 720 x 480 resolution videos for longer recording times, burn to standard DVD and share with people who haven't upgraded to HDTV yet. Remember HD for higher quality recordings or SD for broad compatibility and longer recording time the choice is yours. Video Format Features:
AVCHD Lite
HD 1280 x 720
Standard Definition
SD 720 x 480
The newly designed belt works both ways - as a standard grip belt or a convenient wrist strap. You can choose which way, to best match your style of shooting or carrying at any time

I was after a camera to do time lapse and this one is close to perfect. The built in battery life is only an hour but it has a 5v DC power input which means I can record till the card is full. The 720p image is excellent for the price, the zoom is smooth, it can be used for macro, is light and it starts quickly. The camera has a few minor cons, the display can not be turned off while recording wasting battery power, you cannot set a mode as default and you cannot manually focus.

As a professional videographer I was looking for a small, compact point and shoot camcorder that I could fit in my bag. The JVC Everio GZ-HM30 is ideal for someone with limited knowledge of video production who wants a simple, small camera that just works. The fact that it records on to inexpensive SD cards is a bonus and the HD quality is pretty good considering the low price of the camera. I have used the camera to record simple home movies and video blog style content before uploading the videos footage directly to Youtube from the SD card without the need to convert it first (a real bonus).

Compact, lightweight, simple to use and very good image quality. It is my 5 yo granddaughter's camera and, after explaining to her only once how to use it, she records and then selects individual scenes and uses the playback facility without any further assistance. Thoroughly recommended for anyone wanting a simple, straightforward, quality unit.

After much investigating options for a budget digital video camera, we settled on the JVC HM30. The battery life is the only negative I have to say, about an hour tops from a full charge and genuine spare batteries are expensive.
That said, it is our first video camera and the image quality does not disappoint me in the slightest, the camera is easy to use and intuitive, I would recommend this for someone looking for a basic HD camera, you get what you pay for, yet you need to pay a fair bit more to get an improvement on the specs/performance of this camera. (no doubt this will vary in time)
