Helping bushfire victims build new memories

Victorians who have lost their homes and possessions in the Victorian bushfires will be given free care packages to help them rebuild their photo albums and other photographic memories.

A collective of Victorian photographic retailers and suppliers have joined forces to produce packages for the bushfire victims containing 200 photo processing vouchers, a photo album, photo frames and CD. The packs will be distributed by the Department of Human Services.

“Photographs are a powerful way to bring back memories. They are images that have so much meaning and that we treasure throughout our lives,” said

Rob Gateley of Beau Photos who together with wife Meg, initiated the program with the strong support of Ted’s Cameras and other industry supporters, shortly after the Victorian bushfires destroyed over 2000 homes in February.

“We were searching for the best way to do the most good. Rob had the same idea and cast the net. What he caught was a benevolent group of people in the photographic industry all wanting to contribute and Ted’s was one of them,” said Yolanta Green of Teds.

“We understand that most photos are taken to document significant events which mark our passage through life; first steps, first birthday, first day at school. We want to make sure we restore those great memories in photos which hopefully for some, will help the rebuilding process and for others make the burden a little lighter,” added Yolanta .

With the help of extended family and friends, recipients can use the 200 free print vouchers to produce copies from photos, negatives, digital files and slides. They can also distribute them to family and friends so that they can arrange for copies to be made.

Recipients have until the end of 2010 to redeem the vouchers at Beau Photos, any Victorian Ted’s Cameras store or at a number of independent photographic retailers listed on the vouchers. Rob estimates that up to 5000 labour hours will be donated in printing services alone.

“We couldn’t help with fencing but we make great photos so we’re proud to participate in a program that will help to rebuild family memories and proud to be part of an industry that can be so generous. Thirty years in the business and I can still be amazed,” added Rob

The website http://www.rebuildingmemories.com.au/ is currently under construction and should be live by the end of August.

THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES EXHIBITION

Photographs by Indian children.

This January volunteers from Friends of Kolkata lived in a disadvantaged children's shelter in Kolkata, India and ran photography workshops. The children created many rich, startling images, reflecting their distinctive cultural and physical environment. Their photographs offer the viewer a chance to get a glimpse into the lives and dreams of these children – an experience that will delight, overwhelm and inspire!

Organised by Friends of Kolkata, a Melbourne-based not-for-profit group which coordinates volunteer placements and welfare, environment and education projects in Kolkata, India through partnerships with two Indian NGOs.

For more information about our projects, visit the Friends of Kolkata website.

The exhibition of these images was generously supported by Ted's Camera Stores Australia.

PRESS RELEASE: SURFERS TO ASSIST DROUGHT RELIEF

On Friday 11th of December Phil and Paul Trigger will for the fourth time auction goods in an attempt to raise awareness and funding for Australian drought relief. The auction will be run via the Trigger Brothers Surfboards website (http://www.triggerbrothers.com.au/) for a week, and includes both surfing and non-surfing related items. All money raised will be donated to the Aussie Helpers (http://www.aussiehelpers.org.au/) charity which has recently announced a move to contribute funds with a focus on the children directly affected by the ongoing drought. The charity aims to purchase computers and other necessities to further educational and social opportunities for those less fortunate in the target regions.

Keen Victorian surfers utilise the site’s live beach images daily for the most up to date surf reporting available. It is this function that has led the website to such enormous popularity, and according to Phil Trigger, the perfect platform for assisting such a worthwhile charity. “You know, so many people check our site for the surf cams, we just thought that if they are at work or searching for surf and we could raise some awareness of the position that many less fortunate, rural Australians are in we could help out. It is such an understated issue that is having a major affect on many people that ordinarily we probably wouldn’t think about.”

Highlight items available for bidding on the website include signed surfboards from 4 times World Surfing Champion Mark Richards, 2007 World Champion Mick Fanning, and current Australian superstar Taj Burrow; Surf hardware and Apparel from leading surf retailers such as Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksiver, Volcom, FCS, XCEL wetsuits and many more; Boneo maze and wetlands family passes; Sorrento/Queenscliff ferry passes; accommodation vouchers and much more.

For a full list of items and other information see http://www.triggerbrothers.com.au/, or to assist with donations contact Phil on (03) 59898402.

For further information on the Aussie Helpers Organisation, see http://www.aussiehelpers.org.au/.
