How Do We Measure Video Quality?
Digital video cameras fall into two categories: High Definition (HD) or Standard Definition (SD). High Definition delivers a much higher image quality than Standard Definition. Unlike still cameras, which are measured in megapixels, video quality is measured in lines of resolution. Most current HD cameras record at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. This means 1920 lines from left to right and 1080 lines from top to bottom. SD cameras record at only 720 x 576. As a result HD cameras can deliver a much sharper picture with superior colour rendition.
What Is The Difference Between 1080i and 1080p?
In either an interlaced (i) or progressive (p) method a video camera records by scanning an image. All video cameras scan from top to bottom, however progressive scanning scans each line in turn from top to bottom. Interlaced scans every second line from top to bottom, before going back and scanning each line in between. As a result, footage recorded at 1080p will result in smoother playback.
What Is A Bitrate?
A bitrate is a level of compression. Image quality is better when recorded at a higher bitrate as it is less compressed and therefore retains a higher level of detail. The less compression obviously results in less recording time as it will require larger storage space.
What Are The Different Recording Mediums?
Video footage needs to be stored and different cameras have different mediums to do this. These include:
Hard Disk Drives have the largest capacity in terms of storage. Flash memory and cards are solid state and therefore less susceptible to shock and temperature in comparison. Mini DV has no compression but is more time consuming to transfer.
How Much Can I Record Per Gigabyte?
A rule of thumb is that in Standard Definition 4 gigabytes will provide 1 hour’s worth of footage. For High Definition 4 gigabytes would equate to 15-20 minutes.
How Do I Transfer My Footage to My Computer?
Current video cameras are all supplied with a USB cable that can connect to your PC (With the exception of cameras that record to Mini DV) and can be imported using the software provided.
How Long Will The Battery Last?
