An important note is that the digital camera lens is also ultra wide-angle, making it an excellent travel digital camera to do sweeping landscapes on your next trip. This type of digital camera is a common choice for those heading to an African safari. . Another key advantage of the SX40 is the electronic viewfinder because it means that you can escape the glare of bright sunlight and put the camera up to your eye.
The key features of the SX40 are:
From the above list it is easy to see that the SX40 is a versatile digital camera that can cater for a broad range of uses. The adjustable LCD screen can be used in both video and photographic mode, and allows you to gain unique perspectives previously not possible. In manual shooting modes you can set such settings as the aperture or shutter speed (in a more limited range compared to a DSLR) if you care to. The new SX40 uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for longer lasting performance. If you are looking for a large telephoto lens, order the SX40!

Wife & I enjoy Bird and Wildlife photography, (strictly amateurs), short listed Canon SX40hs, Nikon P500 and Panasonic FZ47, - big zoom and price range fitted our needs, -
visited Ted's and after 1/2 hour of looking, holding, trying out each model with help from a very knowledgable sales assistant decided on SX40hs. Results are great, big zoom and hand held stabiliser function is terrific, even better, digital zoom for really long shots works well also. Still learning how to get the best from the camera but so far, very impressed. Still images, burst, AF tracking, movie, review etc. all easy to use. Definitely recommend this camera, ( and Ted's ), to others. Jean & Ron, Glen Waverley.

I was given this as a present. It has been the best camera ever. Right from the start, I was taking good family shots using the Auto function. Since then I have used it in many ways. Got some good shots at the aquarium. although I hadn't worked out the manual focus, and the auto focus had trouble through the glass.... I used it on a recent trip to China... colleagues were impresed too, and want to buy one. I had some amazing zoom photos from my hotel room on the 34th floor.. I was able to zoom down to people on a boat on the river opposite... I still am working out how to use all the functions, but will learn then slowly... It has been great as a happy snapshot camera, and a great detailed manual camera..... Like everyone mentions the auto focus is a little slow at times, but has not stopped me from taking great photos...... although it is not an SLR, it does everything I want, and I don't have to cart round multiple lenses... I would recommend it for anyone wanting to upgrade from a compact camera to something that is portable, has a great zoom, works well in the dark, but don't want the extra bulk and cost of an SLR....

I was looking for something that would give me more zoom but still be an automatic. This camera is fantastic. It has all the features that I was looking for and more. You can do so much with it. The only downfall is that it is bigger than compact cameras so it's more to carry around but that's too be expected.

just got back from south east asia, brilliant travel camera for low light situations and getting in close when your trying not to intrude on others. It's a little bulky for carrying in the daypack but worth it if you want more than just a holiday snapshot. Really easy to use and takes a really good quality picture.

I was after a good quality compact camera which would give me clear photos and ample zoom. I was afraid of buying an SLR because of the size and the complications of changing lenses, etc. This camera provided exactly what I was after. It is simple, offers a great range of settings and the zoom and picture quality are both very good.

I have used SLR cameras, but most recently a Canon Ixus, until I needed more. The Powershot SX40 is amazing, such a powerful zoom and clear images despite my general lack of a tripod. I am photographing birds, and can get an image with clear eyes and feather delineation at maximum zoom. Macro images of insects and flowers are also outstanding. Imagine when I learn to use it properly and get past just playing!

The sx40 HS is the best camera I have ever had. It has the professional look of an SLR while still being easy enough for a casual photographer to use. It has amazing clear and crisp image quality, the only minor flaw is that sometimes you can't get a good enough focus. That however is easily resolved by re-positioning yourself or working with the zoom. The 35x zoom is amazing and still manages to get clear shots from a great distance. It's simply outstanding seeing the performance levels of this camera. I love working with all the features like shutter speeds and the visual effects. All in all the sx40 HS is a wonderful camera that I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat.

Looked at couple competitive cameras and decided on this due to what we saw as value for money. Took this on OS trip and it has been fantastic. Have not tried every feature but has been easy to navigate thru, The zoom is exceptional. I had realized the optical zoom capability but then realised it also then extends to digital zoom.. Image quality is fantastic.
Only small issue is the positioning of couple of the buttons near the thumb grip pad.. very easy to accidentally hit these.. Overall would absolutely recommend this for anyone looking for a great bridging camera.

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a brilliantly versatile with an outstanding best in class 35x optical zoom. Picture quality is great and much faster than its predecessors. I had captured videos and pictures from a stage show which were brillant and I could do it only coz of the 35 x Zoom. I would defenitely recommend this

Its a well-configured 12.1MP camera, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is good enough for your daily basic use, you can use it to capture decent pictures, And the Optical Image Stabilizer helps images come out steady and clear, and a 24mm ultra Wide-Angle lens makes it easy to take pictures of large groups of people, tall buildings, expansive landscapes and much more.
The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS sports a useful zoom range that begins at 24mm wide-angle and extends to 840mm telephoto (35mm equivalent). The 24mm ultra Wide-Angle allows you to create shots with dramatic perspective and makes it easy to shoot sweeping landscapes.
This Canon camera lets you shoot video in the Appleâ„¢ iFrame format, which is a computer-friendly standard that speeds up importing and editing of videos. Pretty useful.
It also supports EYE-FI coming soon, but out in USA which has geotagging and built in wi-fi, so no plugging in and out. Just turn it on and its on your pc or social media via WI FI. so no more cables and removing sd card.
As you know, the Canon PowerShot series camera is very popular among young people, it’s smart, portable, and easy to use, so more and more people are choosing it.

I like everything about this camera. I upgraded from an SX10, which I loved, and this one hasn't disappointed me.
HOWEVER one thing I am extremely annoyed about is that it does not come with a pocket sized user manual... which I would use. The user manual is on disk on a pdf file to be viewed on computer. I explained to Canon that this was ridiculous because most people learn as they go along and when the whim hits them to try something, and having the manual handy in your camera bag is what is required. They didn't really care, the stock standard answer was that they no longer supply the manual for their compact range. I can't stress enough how much they really did not care at all! This alone will probably stop me from upgrading to the next model down the track.
Yes, it is fairly easy to use and the basic functions aren't rocket science but there are plenty of advanced functions that will go unused unless the manual is referred to.

The Canon PowerShot SX40 is well build and conformable to handle.
Easy to use after reading the manual, and taking your time to use it.
Great for closeup photos of animals, birds, plants, and distance shots, which is what I wanted it for.
Would of been better, if there was a full printed manual , as you want to use it right away.
All in all very happy with what I have bought, but yes I am a Canon fan from way back in the early 1980's.

My new camera is fantastic. The zoom is outstanding and creates excellent quality photos. The camera''s menu system is easy to use. The ease of the auto function allows a novice user to create some fantastic photos. The ability to take 8 burst sports shots is also an excellent feature when viewing sports events. I only bought this camera a month ago but have already taken a lot of photos on a trip to Fiji for a family wedding and got some great shots. It is really easy to use and the zoom is fantastic (one of the best features). My 13 year old daughter used it a lot while away on the holiday and she found it really easy to use and took some great shots too. I compared a few cameras before my purchase and am really happy with my decision to buy this one. There is nothing I don't like about it. Two of the others who were away on the holiday with us looked at our new camera and saw the quality of the photos and are planning on buying the same one for themselves. I would recommend this camera to anyone. It has exceeded my expectations.

I recently bought this camera about 2 months ago and I have found nothing wrong with it. It is a perfect camera for people who may want to start photography. It has a lot of modes such as super slow motion movie, high speed bursts (8 frames a second) and heaps more modes and options. I recommend this camera to people who want to do photography. As I am 11 years old I think it is a perfect camera. The other thing I absolutely love about the camera is its ZOOM POWER, it can go 35X which is awesome!

A great camera for hobbyists as it gives you the opportunity to experiment, whilst still being able to take that quick snapshot. The zoom capabilities are amazing and let you get close to far away subjects, it had me breathless at some moon shots that I took (at night). The battery life seems lower than a good set of lithium batteries, so for those who take lots of photos a spare is an essential accessory. As far as movies go, although with limited use the quality seems very good and it has a neat slow motion movie capture (for fun). Overall, as an owner of an earlier model, the SX40HS has enough extras to keep me satisfied with my upgrade.
