The PowerShot SX230 HS takes great images anywhere with HS System, a 28mm wide-angle 14x optical zoom and Full HD movies. GPS tags your shots and logs your journey making it the ultimate travel compact.
Features
Capture your travels. Anytime. Anywhere.
HS System (12.1 MP)
HS System excels in low light allowing you to capture the real atmosphere of the moment without flash or tripod. A high performance DIGIC 4 processor and high sensitivity image sensor give superior image quality in all situations.
28mm with 14x zoom and Optical IS
A wide-angle lens with a huge 14x telephoto reach allows you to frame exactly the shot you want. From panoramic landscapes to distant subjects, an advanced optical Image Stabilizer keeps shots steady.
GPS* with Logger function
With GPS tagging, every picture you shoot contains key data on where and when it was taken while the GPS Logger can record your journey. Using the supplied software you can review your images and journey on a map.
Full HD with optical zoom. Dynamic IS and Stereo sound
High quality movies can be recorded in Full HD 1080p format with stereo sound. The optical zoom can be used for filming while Dynamic IS reduces the effect of shake and movement when shooting on the move.
Wide 7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD
Images are easy to frame thanks to a large 7.5 cm (3.0”) high resolution PureColor II G LCD. A tempered glass outer layer offers increased strength and excellent visibility.
Smart Auto
Smart Auto automatically detects up to 32 different shooting scenes so you can take great pictures in complete confidence, knowing that the camera will take care of everything for you.
High-speed Burst & Super Slow Motion Movie
Capture fast-paced action using the High-speed Burst mode or slow down movement using Super Slow Motion Movie mode. Both modes provide dramatic and spectacular ways of recording fast-moving subjects.
Movie Digest & iFrame movie
Movie Digest captures up to 4-seconds of the action before a shot is taken, joining all the clips together from the same day into a single VGA movie to add to your collection of photos. The iFrame video format is a simple way to quickly import, edit and share video.
Manual Control
From semi-automatic Av and Tv modes to Full Manual you can control one single aspect of the exposure or take complete control.
Waterproof Case
An optional waterproof case (WP-DC42) allows you to go down to depths of 40m.

You'll need to kep an eye on the pop up flash, make sure you don't cover it or use it unnecessarily because it automatically pops up every time you turn the camera on and using the full 14x zoom can decrease picture quality, but we already know it comes with the territory. Other than than, it's pretty awesome. Easy to use, good quality, better zoom than your average compact digital.

Brought the camera for myself for Xmas, to have in my hand bag for times when I'm out and a moment arises that I'd like to capture. Have used it more than I could of imagined, I'm very happy for how easy it is to use and the quality of the pictures also.

I bought this camera after researching on DPReview and getting helpful advice at Ted's. My wife and I wanted a high optical quality camera with long zoom but still compact. The long zoom really makes a difference on landscapes. GPS was a bonus. On a recent trip to England, the camera lived up to our expectations. My wife is not a natural with technology but she intuitively mastered the camera's main features. Only two gripes. Battery life is poor with GPS tracking turned on and using the GPS is a bit clumsy. There is no display of location on screen, just on computer when you download the images.

The Canon PowerShot SX230 is easy to use, looks good and produces photos which have friends asking what camera I use. Build quality and size are good while the only negative (and a small one at that), has been the battery life which is average. It's a camera I would definately reccomend and have done so already.

Very happy so far with my new camera. I have used it a bit and have tried several of the functions and am very happy with the quality of the photos on the screen. I have not printed any as yet. It is slightly heavier and thicker than my last camera and as I keep it in my bag all the time have noticed a slight difference in weight. Still learning how to get the most out of it but I am sure that the more I use it the better I will find it. Love the PINK!!!!!

Good camera, took with me on o/seas trip and it was very easy to use. Day light, night shots - all came out reasonably good. Also good mix of manual options for those who wants to use them.
The only downside is that for a camera that has GPS-logging feature, the battery life is disappointedly short. I will recommend it for people who want Geo-location on photos, but not the GPS-trip-log.

highly recommended in fact my friend wants to buy one. currently he is using SLR
i bought it to have primary camera a back back up for my old canon ixus which i bought in your store 2 yrs ago. we went to europe primary to download in my iPad2. the resolution is fantastic and it works perfectly with my iPad, imagine download hundred of photos everyday. Thanks Simon of Southland VIC for recommending SX230. I luv it
cons: when GPS is on, using too much battery (battery life getting shorter)

I just love this little camera! So simple to use and so easy to grab to take my photos. It has hardly been out of my hands since I bought it.
The clarity of the digital screen is amazing - I can see exactly what I want to shoot , which are mainly the flowers and birds in my garden.
The screen indicates the auto focus quickly and clearly making my floral shots a dream.
I dont do so well with action shots of my grandchildren but that would be because I havent yet read the manual, certainly not any fault of the camera!
My photos are now so good I am using them to create postcards and shortly I hope to make my own greeting cards to send.
This is a wonderful camera to have and to give as a present to anyone.

We bought the Canon Powershot SX230 HS to replace a Sony DSC-H1(relatively bulky high-zoom camera circa 2006) as we wanted something more compact and capable of doubling as a video camera for an overseas holiday with our young family. Key features we were looking for were 10+ zoom (stabilised), good quality images, HD/FullHD video, 3:2 still aspect ratio (we print photos) in a compact form.
After much hands-on research we concluded that none of the cameras we saw matching these requirements were as good as the 5 year-old Sony in terms of image quality (particularly indoors), but that the Canon offered the best we could find and matched our other requirements.
Having used the camera for several months (mostly travelling), the camera has essentially met expectations (both good and bad). Image quality has been good (but not exceptional), and video has probably exceeded expectations. The high zoom met our requirements but my impression was that the image stabilisation was not as effective as the older Sony.
We've used variety of consumer digital cameras over several years and the UI for the SX230 HS is reasonable without being exceptional. Minor inconsistencies in playback options between still-image and video continue to catch me out.
As we had read prior to purchase, battery life ranges from 'ok' (without GPS) to pathetic with GPS on - given the terrible battery life of these cameras when the GPS feature is turned on (and it really is terrible), its value is questionable.
The Canon Powershot SX230 HS performs well for a compact travel camera with lots of features and solid image quality. I expect we will continue to use our old Sony at home for its image quality for family shots, but the Canon will be our choice when we are out and about as it still provides good quality and the convenience of a compact doubling as video camera.

Overall I am very satisfied with this camera. I particularly like the screen and data display which are clear and easy to read. I also like the mode dial which I much prefer to a screen display/selection. However, I think that the on/off switch is too small and not as easily accessible as I would like, being too close to the mode dial. Also, I would prefer a larger video recording button and not as close to the playback button. I appreciate that it is a compact camera and its controls are bound to be, well, compact. The zoom is a bit too sensitive for my liking but I guess I'll have to get used to that. The image quality is not nearly as good as that of my dear old Nikon D40 DSLR, but that is to be expected. I use the Canon Powershot as a back up for the DSLR and as a camera to use when I don't want to be encumbered by anything bulky. It slips into my pocket beautifully. Overall it does what I want it to do.

Great camera. Easy to use, but tons of capacity not touched on yet. Fantasic zoom, took wonderful photos in Barcelona recently. The trip was the reason for the purchase. The new camera had to be Canon as I have had Canon cameras for many years, even in the roll film days.
Loved the many uses of thre camera. Lovely photos in poor light and with stark contast, such as lamplight and sunshine and shade. Also very happy with colour range available-the hot pink. It does not get lost in the handbag. Very sturdy too!!

I will be travelling to Africa next year and wanted a small, easy to use camera that could fit into my handbag - especially for times when my bigger camera was impractical to take eg. on horseback. After purchase I took the camera away for a weekend to experiment with and was really impressed with how easy it was to use,the quality of the photos and in particular the zoom length. A great little camera!

I found the camera to be very compact and light to carry. The quality of my printed photos are good. My previous camera had the option of an eyepice to view the image to be photographed. This one doesn't have that option. The screen on this camera is OK in subdued light, but I have a lot of difficulty viewing an image on the screen in bright sunlight, in fact it is almost impossible at times, and therefore I cannot always visualise exactly what will appear in the finished photo

I am no Genius at using a camera, having used friends cameras on holidays but I can say that this camera is great for the first timers. Has plenty of great feature from novice photographers through a few that the pros must use. The only downsize to the camera is the flash always pooping up, even if you have it switched off but other than that, I would recommend it to anyone.

Our previous Canon compact had taken over 60,000 photos so it was time to get a new one. I had been manually geotagging photos so the inbuilt GPS was the deciding factor.
I learnt to use the camera while away on holiday and took lots of wonderful photos. I found that I rarely needed to change out of Auto mode. It just knew the type of photo I wanted to take. The 15x zoom allowed me to get great closeups or narrow in on just the bits I wanted. The stabiliser meant that they were clear.
When I do move off Auto it is often to Handheld night scene mode. I love taking those photos at night that just don't work with a flash.
The camera is small enough to take everywhere, and powerful enough to take photos of everything.
I am very happy with my new Canon.

I like the size of the camera as easily fits into pocket.. To date I have mainly been using auto focus, without flash as much as possible, some indoor shots tend to have more yellow. I like the zoom and have had very good sharp images of objects some distance away. I like macro, but do not find ease of macro set up on this camera as good as previous camera. Downloading photos to pc is also slower than previous camera on same pc.

The picture quality is good in close up shots but not so great with landscape pics. Initially the catch you push to show the battery was quite tight and would jam but this seems to have loosened over time. I have not used the movie feature yet. Overall I am happy with the ourchase.

Very good camera. One small design fault. Flash is right under left hand index finger, so when you take camera in normal "I'm about to take a photo" hands position, your left index finger actually prevents flash from opening.

the only bad part from this cam is battery, its can only run less than 1 hour,so if i bring it with me when i travel.its always run out of battery.and the reason why i got this 1 is cos the GPS function, the worse is if i turn GPS on,battery gone faster.so i never turn it on,so whats the point, others all good, but if i dont have battery support me i cant use it do anything at all.
i still recommend this 1,but before you buy,,you have to make sure you buy a extra battery as well, its a fun cam,but you just need battery to run it and play with,

Tell the truth I first looked at the camera because it was hot pink - easy to find in my handbag - larger than the Ixus that I had before but the Ted's staff member explained that I could adjust the depth of field and focus and what this meant. I didn't really understand properly but at a cafe in Townsville with my hubby he explained the settings again and so I took some shots in the cafe while I waited for my dinner to arrive. Spectacular!
I am so excited - now I can understand some of those photography magazines articles and try out the artistic shots. It's all so simple and the quality of my photos has improved. The iphone gets less of a workout when I really want a special photo because it's a bit limited now that I can adjust those couple of settings!
Look I'm not going to take the time to be a professional photographer but I can show off some pretty cute photos that look just a little better than they would have before I got this little pink camera.

This camera is an excellent, easy to use travel camera. With a 10x optical zoom in a compact casing and GPS tracking if you want its perfect for carting around the world on your travel adventures. The battery life, especially when using the GPS function, is a little short but it's easily fixed by carrying a second battery around with you in your case.
Overall i highly recommend the Canon SX230 HS and love using.

I purchased my Canon Powershot to take to Europe. I thought the camera was fantastic. The zoom was brilliant and gave me the opportunity to get up close to loads of sights! The picture quality is fantastic. The photos are so clear and the colours are crisp.
Overall, the camera is a tiny bit larger than many of the digital cameras, but the benefits far outweigh this and I am so glad I chose to go with the Canon Powershot!
