The PowerShot S100 uses Canon EOS sensor know-how and the latest DIGIC 5 processor to deliver exceptional images even in low light. With an f/2.0 lens, RAW and GPS this is an expert compact with impact.
Features
High-sensitivity 12.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor
The high-sensitivity 1/1.7 type CMOS sensor, developed using EOS DSLR sensor know-how, works in combination with the DIGIC 5 processor to deliver class leading image quality especially at higher ISO speeds and in low light.
HS System with DIGIC 5
The HS System is a powerful combination of the DIGIC 5 image processor, which is 6x more powerful than DIGIC 4, and a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor. It lets you shoot with low noise and high image quality even in low light up to ISO 6400 - reducing the need for flash or a tripod.
Versatile lens. Intelligent IS
A bright f/2.0 lens further extends your ability to shoot in darker conditions. A 24mm ultra-wide angle setting lets you take stunning landscapes and a flexible 5x zoom gets you up close. Intelligent IS automatically selects exactly the right optical Image Stabilizer setting from 7 possible modes to ensure sharp, detailed photos and videos.
Lens Control Ring, Noise Reduction control and RAW
The lens Control Ring allows quick access to functions such as zoom, aperture, shutter speed, focus or ISO. Make adjustments to the level of noise reduction applied to images or shoot in RAW format for post-processing in the supplied DPP software.
GPS
Embed valuable location information into your images every time you take a shot with GPS tagging. The GPS Logger function can record your position at set time intervals so you can review your entire journey on the supplied Map Utility software.
Full HD Movies, HDMI-CEC
Record superb, Full HD 1080p movies at 24fps with stereo sound. An HDMI-CEC mini connection allows for loss-less playback on a compatible HDTV.
7.5 cm (3.0”) PureColor II G LCDA 460k dot bright and clear LCD features a tempered glass outer layer for strength and high visibility even when shooting in bright conditions.
High-speed Burst HQ
Thanks to the processing capabilities of DIGIC 5 you can capture full resolution split second action at 9.6fps in an 8-frame burst using High-speed Burst HQ mode.
Smart Auto, Multi-area WB
Smart Auto selects camera settings for you from 32 different scenes (21 in movies), automatically ensuring optimum results. Multi-area White Balance compensates for the presence of multiple light sources for natural results.
Optional Waterproof Case
Protect your camera underwater to depths of up to 40m with the optional WP-DC43 waterproof case.

I own the canon 5DmkII unit and more often then not find myself in a situation where I have not got time to take it out, and put a lens on to get a shot. With this Canon S100, it's great. just whip it out, point, and shoot. IS on the unit is excellent, and pic quality really great.

We use our camera at our monthly orchid club meetings. We produce the monthly magazine for our members. The photos taken of the winning orchid in each catorgory is printed in the magazine. The photos are clear and true to colour. We do not need to use the flash inside as the camera compensates for the low light in the hall. It has an excellent macro. The camera is extremely easy to use.

Still learning manual fucntions to optimise my use. Have been searching the internet for a better manual than the crummy one which came with the camera. Otherwise, all good.
Am going OS soon and it will be an ideal pocket SLR of sorts !

I wanted another Canon compact that had updated features. I'd been very happy with my Canon Ixus series camera. I have since passed that one down to my son. He too likes the wide angle lens. The photos show alot of detail and the whole thing is very easy to use. This will now be my everyday camera as was my previous Canon. I do own and use a DSLR for special occasions but the majority of pictures I now take are with my compact as it fits in my bag and it's easy to use, but most important to me, is that it produces the quality image I always look for .

I was so happy with my previous Canon that this S100 was a natural progression. Sharper images and more powerful zoom. Amazing for such a small camera. It matches up to all the reviews.

Pocket sized compact with a large screen and superb bright lens without sacrificing size.
Great night and indoor shots are possible without the annoyance of flash photography.
Battery life is the only negative, so take your charger on trips and ensure a full charge for each day's activities.

We took this fantastic little camera on a recent trip to Europe and loved its versatility, weather you point and shoot, or if your an enthusiast like me, require full manual control.
My wife, previously a point and shoot photographer, has particularly enjoyed the camera as she was able to experiment with the easy to use manual settings whilst gaining confidence to produce some stunning images.
I would suggest you invest in a gorillapod, under $20, to give you flexibility for those challenging shots when there is no one to hold the camera as well as an extra battery for under $20 (non genuine) if you plan to take lots of video.
This camera is a great substitute to a larger SLR if you don't want to lug a big camera around with you.

I needed a new camera and shopped around endlessly until I saw this one. It is compact, easy to use, clear instructions, large screen, easy to download photos, takes macro shots, good without flash in low light. I'm loving it and would highly recommend it.

good alternative to a dslr, I bought 2 more genuine batteries and now have no worries. considering getting a second one as the other half has taken a liking to it. also check out the retro leather cases on ebay like $10 and they are awsome.

Good quality photos as one would demand of this type of camera. Complex to use and not ideal for beginners but if you know what you are doing, allows control over many aspects. Battery life is short when using GPS (not surprisingly) but this can be switched off.
Unfortunately my camera lasted approximately 2.5 months before developing the dreaded 'lens malfunction; will automatically switch off' problem common to many Powershot cameras. I had to return it to canon for repair under warranty (to NSW at my postage expense of course). Hopefully this does not continue to happen (as it has had to other Powershot users of different models). I wish Canon could resolve this issue across the Powershot range as it keeps raising its ugly head and is indicative of poor quality parts in the lens retraction mechanism. Not a good sign considering the retail price of this device.

I love the fact the rotating ring at the front can be used for a wide range of features, the LCD display is very crisp and clear. The option to turn the GPS on for Geo-tagging is exactly what someone (like myself that will use it for traveling) will really enjoy when you review your images when you get back.
This is everything i wanted to back up my DSLR when space/weight is a issue.
There is no complaints from me and i would definitely recommend it

The S100 is a proficient do-it-all camera with a huge range of features plus GPS which should keep professional photographers happy. Takes excellent photos in all light situations. My canon 7D can now except many rests as the S100 just blitzed it with best holiday photos ever! This classy compact should not disappoint unless you're expecting SLR-like speeds.

Loads of functions in one little camera! I particularly love the low light shooting. Photos turns out perfect even taking shots in Museum without using flasher. The battery life is a bit shorter than other cameras. But with all the special functions available such as sence, I would not look for another campact camera. It is impressive that I can also have full manual control on the camera like SLR. As a digitial campact camera, I really can't ask more. When I show it to my friends, they are impressed what a little camera can do. I love it!

Very happy with this camera, although I am still working through all the extra functions which are probably far beyond my general use.
Battery doesn't last as long as my old camera (Casio exilim) so I need another spare battery.
I do like that the battery can be charging on a separate device though so the camera can still be in use (with a 2nd battery). My previous camera had to be put on a charging dock.
Screen size is excellent on this camera and the clarity/photo quality is unreal.

The s100 is a great compact camera that is versatile and easy to use, but has a number of really innovative functions that allow you to use your creativity in shooting photos. Overall it is a good all round camera that is a joy to use and provides great photographic results. The one negative is the pop up flash, which tends to be in the way of comfortably holding the camera

The S100 is a fantastic camera for the price. I wanted a compact p&s with GPS, decent zoom, high resolution, RAW format, fast/responsive, full HD video, good low-light performance and controls from full auto to fully manual - and this camera delivers all this plus more. So much more, though, that it gets complex in manual modes, especially when combining settings such as shutter speed selection and ND filter levels, for example, mainly due to the lack of physical buttons to control different settings: you have to use the menu to select the settings you want. Takes a bit of getting used to but you rarely have to navigate more than 2 levels in a menu hierarchy .
The lens is good but it's not a super-zoom and DoF is mainly limited to extreme close-ups in macro mode. A more versatile lens would make for a better camera but would probably result in a bigger camera, so it's a fair compromise for the size.
Low-light performance is amazing: the large sensor and excellent ISO sensitivity make for great pictures in the dark, especially combined with the night-time scene settings. This makes for less blur as the camera can use faster shutter speeds.
Most of the Program and Scene options are useful and make a noticeable difference (improvement) to the picture - most of the time, but not all.
The LCD screen is very good and easily seen in bright sunlight. A swivel would have been really good though...
Overall: great features for the $. Highly recommended as a complement to a DSLR - but definitely not a replacement.

Bought the S100 primarily as a compact to fit in the pocket and wanted the best image quality for the size (for those times when I couldn't bring my bulkier Canon EOS 400D). The S100 certainly fits the bill with superb image quality for its size and plenty of shooting options. I also use it for video which also has very high quality.
Even though the battery life is low, I bought the second battery so I don't get caught out.
I'd rather the camera battery be small to keep the portability than have a larger bulkier battery.
Overall its everything I expected after doing weeks of research viewing samples and reading other technical aspects. I have no hesitation in recommending the S100 as the best pocketable camera for its zoom range (24-120mm) at this time. Very happy with my purchase.
