The EOS 550D redefines the boundaries of Canon’s consumer DSLR range, incorporating technologies and features more commonly found in semi-professional DSLRs into the compact, lightweight body favoured by consumers. With a newly-developed 18 Megapixel (MP) APS-C CMOS sensor, coupled with Canon’ s advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and the ability to shoot Full HD movies, photography enthusiasts are empowered to explore new levels of creativity.
Creative control with no compromise on quality
The EOS 550D makes Canon’ s powerful imaging technology more accessible to consumers. Canon’ s advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and 18MP sensor support standard ISO settings of 100 - 6400 (expandable to 12800), while enhanced in-camera noise reduction technology boosts performance in low light conditions. The system’ s 14-bit image processing also produces smoother tonal gradation and natural looking colours for high quality prints and on-screen display.
For swift and accurate focusing, the EOS 550D features a 9-point AF system with one extra-sensitive cross-type point at the centre for f/2.8 or faster lenses. The EOS 550D also supports high-speed, continuous shooting at 3.7 frames per second (fps). These features provide users with the opportunity to exert greater control over their images, allowing them to capture split-second moments with ease and accuracy.
Continuing Canon’ s tradition of filtering new technology and features down from its advanced and professional DSLR ranges, the EOS 550D includes the iFCL metering system first launched in the EOS 7D. New for EOS is the ability to set the top limit for automatic ISO, allowing users to control the maximum amount of noise in their images. In a first for entry level EOS, exposure compensation and bracketing can be set up to plus or minus five and two stops respectively, allowing the photographer to take a number of differently exposed versions of the same shot to ensure they capture a well-exposed image, even in difficult lighting conditions.
“Digital SLR photography has captured the imagination of consumers globally,” said Kieran Magee, Director of Product Planning, Consumer Products, Canon Europe. “Every year, more and more individuals are looking to record key life events with unrivalled quality or to test and explore their creativity. The EOS 550D redefines the entry level DSLR category, putting technologies and features previously the preserve of the professional into the hands of the consumer - allowing them to achieve outstanding results. With the EOS 550D, consumers are free to explore the limits of their own creative vision.”
EOS Movies: Full HD video with creative control
As the ability to record Full HD video becomes increasingly important, Canon continues to deliver DSLR technology that sets the industry benchmark for multimedia functionality. The EOS 550D records video in full 1920x1080p HD resolution, allowing photographers to select the frame rate preferred from 30, 25 and 24fps, as well as offering 720p video at 60 and 50fps. The EOS 550D also includes a 3.5mm stereo microphone socket, enabling the use of an external microphone when capturing video.
Photographers can also take manual control over exposure settings, changing the depth of field and degree of motion blur to shoot more creatively. To provide the best possible video quality, highlight tone priority (HTP) can be set independently for movie capture, without changing any still image capture settings. In situations where the subject is further away, the EOS 550D Movie Crop function records with the central 640x480 pixel area of the sensor, creating an effective magnification of approximately seven times. The EOS 550D is the first in the EOS range to feature Movie Crop and gives consumers more flexibility to capture important moments which would otherwise be too far away.
A clear view of your world
The EOS 550D also allows photographers to view their images and video in unhindered clarity. A 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD screen with 1,040k dot resolution makes it possible to see 100% of captured images with no borders. The anti-reflective, water-repellent coating also makes it easier to see the screen in bright conditions and from a variety of angles.
EOS build - Canon quality
As consumers would expect from an EOS DSLR, the EOS 550D is built to a high quality specification. It features bigger, more intuitive buttons which have been redesigned following feedback from users. Based on this feedback, the EOS 550D also features an additional button on the new, battery grip, allowing aperture settings to be changed when shooting with the camera in a vertical position, without having to reorient the body.
Share the moment with friends and family
For EOS 550D photographers, shooting great pictures and video is just a first step. Thanks to an integrated HDMI port compatible with High-Definition Multimedia Interface - Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI-CEC), video and images stored on the EOS 550D can be viewed on an HD-ready TV and controlled via the TV remote.
For users who want to transfer content wirelessly, the EOS 550D includes Eye-Fi connected functions. The EOS 550D features a dedicated Eye-Fi section in the User Interface and it disables the automatic power-down function when an Eye-Fi card is transmitting - allowing users to transfer content easily and without interruption.
Accessories
The EOS 550D is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX series Speedlite flash units, including the compact Speedlite 270EX. The EOS 550D is also compatible with the new RC-6 Remote Control, allowing photographers to capture high quality stills and Full HD video without touching the camera body. The slim line infrared controller can trigger the shutter release from up to five metres away, with users able to select either immediate release or a two second delay for greater flexibility when shooting. As well as supporting EOS 550D, the RC-6 is also compatible with the EOS 450D, 500D, 7D and 5D Mark II.
CANON iMAGE GATEWAY - share your stories
Owners of the new Canon EOS 550D can join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, a free online facility for Canon users that makes it easy to share their photos and video. Users can take advantage of up to 2GB of personal storage space, creating enough room for hundreds of high-quality images. Mobile browsing is also supported, making it easy for friends and family to view photos on the move.

Overall very pleased with the quality of images. Basically using it on AV mode mostly so I can set aperture, ISO speed. The built in flash is ok up to about 4m at which point you have to crank the ISO up. Probably invest in a external flash in the near future. HD video has been a little troublesome with the card not writing fast enough and recording stopping on occasion, its a L6 san disk card. Sometimes its fine, sometimes not, can't seem to work out why? Live view mode is a waste of time with focusing and shutter lag being unacceptable unless your taking pics of still objects. I use viewfinder 99% of the time and find battery life excellent, recently took 250 plus pics at a kids party, mostly with flash and it was still showing full at the end. The lens is a great all rounder 18-135 but at 3.5 does not achieve that really blurred out back ground on portraits, zooming in increases the effect but ideally a faster lens would be better. Might purchase the std lense at some time in the future. Overall compared to my old compact I get a far greater number of perfect sharp photos, where 1 in 10 was razor sharp with the compact something like half are with this, of course depends on the subject, light etc. Was considering a compact with interchangeable lenses but so glad I went with this, just feels great in the hand and the results are very pleasing.

Professional photographer in an earlier life. Hesitant to move to didgital SLR; thought it could not match twin-reflex camera functions. HOW WRONG! This camera does all that the ancient twin reflex does and much more with ease. So many features many of which used to be performed in the dark-room AFTER the shot was taken. I can now manipulate the settings in endless combinations to produce the perfect desired shot on a beautifully lit viewing screen. When I'm done, the camera's sensor cleaning feature prepares the camera for the next occasion. I've already recommended the camera and Ted's to my friend who is soon heading for an overseas holiday detination.

I bought this camera in march because I'm doing year 12 vce media and i needed an SLR to do my actual product with. This was the newest camera out and i have to say i am absolutely in love with it. The quality of picture is just amazing. I found it really easy to use (seeing as it was my first time actually using an SLR) and i love the simplicity of just all of it. Great camera. Great Result! The quality of the pictures this camera takes is incredible and will satisfy an amateur beginner as well as the most demanding photographer. Would definitely suit a budding photography student starting college. (Me....)
Started off with a Canon Rebel 300D, which was quite daunting at first after having used a 2.1 Mp "point and shoot" camera for many years. I just could not believe how the 550D camera with the Image Stabilizer lenses can take such great photos.
Canon, I believe, have the best camera gear available on the market.
Of course, Ted's Camera Supplies are the only place to get your Canon camera from.
Great service and advice. Thanks Ted.

Very good for people at a entry level and basic high-quality photos(depending on the lens). Though it can be complicated if not guided how to use- which is of course what the instruction manual is for. The cameras build quality is a 50/50 rating because it has a problem when the flash does not work properly for a while when something happens to it i.e contact with light water (it returns to normal after a day or so -which is lovely ) yet the camera is tough. Its also has an extensive battery life and overall it i a great dslr for starters or anybody who wants to take great pictures!!

Not many functions available but its great if for your first DSLR. Battery life could be better but is okay. Video function is great as not many cameras in that price range have a video option. Photo quality is generally great however with the flash on the camera can be a little slow sometimes. Overall great value for money and great for beginners.

This is my first DSLR. As a newbie to photography I have found this camera quite easy to start taking good photos with from the beginning. I am still to learn how to use the manual features, but have been able to take some great photos of my children (my purpose for buying) from the day it arrived using the automatic and semi-automatic settings. I look forward to being able to operate it in manual in the near future.

the canon 550D is one of the best cameras I've used.
the video function is my favorite feature. i film BMX and drifting (car racing) mostly and am amazed with the quality of video produced.
As i still mainly use the camera for taking photos the 550D makes it so easy to film something at the touch of a button and not having to get up swap cameras and go back to the same angle.
another advantage to using the video function on the 550D is i don't have to buy all new lenses for a video camera to get the same zoom,angle etc. i can use all my lenses for both video and photo.
i have already recommended the 550D to all of mates, three of which have gone and bought one of their own.
the 550D is in my/our opinion the best all round camera and not just for its price. whether you're a professional, casual, or just a beginner just trying to get good quality photos. this camera has everything u need.

Hi, I bought this camera and lens for an upcoming holiday to UK where I will be visiting museums and the International Airscurcuit. This camera is simply fantastic, easy to use with heaps of battery life and the Tamron lens is brilliant. This is my first SLR camera and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great all round SLR especially for the beginner. My 12yo daughter has taken some brilliant photos and even teaching me how to change settings for even better results.AAA+++

As a student, I was looking for quality images and an easy to use camera that still has the feel and flexibility of a more professional camera. The 550D was the obvious choice for me after careful research in the field. Its just like what every other review says, so much more than an entry level camera, perfect for the price and amazing images.

I bought this camera to use in a school. I needed to have a camera that was user friendly as a number of different people could use the camera.it has been used enthusiastically by all. The other quality I required was the ability to zoom in on subjects from a distance. The twin lens package provided this capability and the quality of the pictures even at distance is excellent. A great purchase at a great price. Teds staff were very helpful and made the purchase process easy.

This is the first SLR I have owned and I love everything about it. I've used my friends Nikon and Sony and didn't find either as good as the Canon.. Compared to the other two the Canon feels heavier after a while, but that is the only 'Con' I could find.

I cannot say how much I am loving my 550D! A previous SLR owner from pre digital days, at first hubby and I used a few compacts with the switch to digital photography. I've been lusting for a good SLR that didn't break the bank but that allowed me to use the wonderful Canon image stabilised lenses I loved so much before. My pictures are razor sharp, the camera has been an easy transition into as many of the features are similar to what was available in my Ixus 80IS that finally died from heavy use!
I've been very impressed by the built in flash and the massively long battery life before a recharge. I keep expecting the battery to die, but it just keeps on working. Impressive!
The weight of the camera has taken a bit of getting used to after so long with lightweight compacts but the features and finesse I have now with the 550D more than make up for the small inconvenience of its weight for travel. The photos its producing have beautifully accurate colour rendering and what feels like virtually no lag time between shooting compared to what we had before, which was slooooow!
The sports mode with continual shooting back to back is wonderful for snapping the kids and our cats. So many great moments had been lost previously with a slow autofocus, but no longer.
Now of course, I want to add a telephoto lens with greater range than the all rounder 17-85 that we have found wonderful for landscape and portrait shots. I like that I can stagger the purchase of the lenses as and when I want or need them.
I've already recommended this to many people who cannot afford a higher priced body but want to put their funds into great lenses instead. The casing does feel more lightweight and plasticky compared to some other SLR models, but honestly I don't think I'd be wanting additonal weight from a heavier larger body anwyay, because at the end of the day when you travel you are carrying it constantly and every gram counts.
Screen size has been sufficient for me to get a good review of photos before I decide if I need to snap more or not, and to show people who may not see the printed or digital file version of the photo on a computer. There's more still for us to learn using it as its been a while since we used an SLR but we are finding the manual is helpful and playing with the cameras settings is not difficult to experiment with different functions.
All around, a savvy buy for those who want great images without shelling out serious money.

With the assistance of staff in-store at the time of purchase I am able to use all the features of this camera and capture special moments with a quality photo. The instruction manual is easy to follow and the camera itself is easy to use. Changing the lens is a simple process of pressing a button and lining up the coloured dots. I have marine fish and the camera highlights the fluorescent features of fish perfectly. it's almost impossible to take a bad photo.

As with all new devices there was a learning curve associated with all the 550D functions. However after a couple of days, and with the aid of the manual, the 550D become more and more intuitive to use.
The battery life is also very good, with the rechargeable battery providing enough juice to power the camera through the more than one day, even when it was used regularly.
Overall this is a camera which i would recommend for people who are not budget conscience and people who are looking for a very good camera to delve into the world of DSLRs

My last DSLR was a Pentax *istDS 6mpx which I bought in 2005, it's served me well, but I felt that maybe it was time to get something a bit better. I opted for the Canon 550D based upon what friends told me, I know several professional photographers via the social media sites I use frequently, and on examples of what I could see on Flickr and YouTube.
I wanted to visit Teds to get more information about the camera, and to actually hold and use it a few times, to get the feel of it.
The first thing that struck me was that it was much lighter than my older DSLR and therefore I'd be more likely to take it on long walks, than leave it at home.
I have used it a lot since and have to say that I'm completely satisfied with the camera and would certainly recommend it to anyone, in fact I have, and one friend has since bought one too.
Now I'm not a pro by any means, but I'm not a beginner either, having used cameras for a good portion of my life, that said, the camera is very easy to use and there is a lot of help available online if you're the least bit confused.
I feel that if you're after a good, solid camera and want something a bit more sophisticated than a point and shoot, then get this, it's a wonderful camera.

The 550D is my first DSLR. Once I'd got by head around the basics of photography, i found the camera very easy and compelling to use. I'm still learning, but the quality of images from this camera has certainly met my expectations. I'm loving using It. And it was excellent value from Teds. If you plan on doing a lot of work where you can't get behind the camera (near ground level, or above head), then the flip-out LCD on the 600D may be worth the extra spend.

I bought this camera to take photos of my daughter playing basketball in a special tournament she was chosen to play in. The sports setting did everything for me. All I had to do was point and shoot and I ended up with more photos than I needed. I was extremely pleased. As it turned out, the professional photographer everyone was relying on at the venue did not take enough photos of the game and many parents were left disappointed. I wasn't!

I seriously cannot cannot find a significant flaw in this DSLR. I have absolutely loved working with it; the design is amazing, considering that its made of plastic. The image quality and movie is spectacular, although I'm not a big fan of cinematography. It's definitely worth every cent.
High ISOs are amazing; could work comfortably with 1600.
My only gripe is the 18-55mm kit lens that comes included in the package. It doesn't allow you to access the 550d's photo capabilities.
All in all, I highly recommend this DSLR for those looking for a no fuss model that produces excellent images quality.

Forget you old digital camera, making the move to SLR was a great choice. Once you take the time to understand the extra features, the extra megapixels can make a good photo a whole lot better. Wish I had bought one earlier

I have always wanted a simple to use but high quality digital SLR camera. The Canon EOS 550D fulfills those requirements at a very reasonable price. Image quality at 18megapixels is good for enlargments. Its easy to use on all the auto modes and easy to change manual settings. 9-point auto focus is quick and accurate. Battery life is excellent to the point where I don't believe I will need a second battery. Oveall I am very impressed for the sale price of $899.

We had been thinking for a while to buy an SLR and after buying this one dont know why we didnt do it earlier. This camera is an excellent camera to get you started. It was easy to use and produced fantastic results. Although we know we can do better and are looking forward to this journey as we know this camera will not let us down. When we got back from our holiday we recommended this camera to all our friends as we were very happy with the results.

We were always talking about buying an SRL Camera but was always put off how people said it was "Complicated" especially for first time users and amateurs. But after buying this camera Cannon EOS 550D the experience has been so easy with fantastic results. We were able to get right into on our recent holidays and were amazed by the results. Although we have a long way to go but we know it will be an exciting journey with this camera. Have already recommended to all our friends!

The Canon 550d is a robust adaptable camera that can be as simple as click and go and as complicated and rewarding as you want. The video created by this camera is of a great quality and suits nearly any filmaker. All in all the camera is great value well built and good for many many different demographics. For film making i would recomend and external mike and an f1.8 50mm lense comes in very handy. I hope this helps!

I have been more then satisfied with the 550D. I can shoot for extremely long periods of time before the battery goes down one bar. image quality is superb. However i find that the body feels slightly plasticy and i do think they could improve the ease of use as it is an entry level camera. But other than that i think it is a great camera and worth every penny.

The EOS 550D is a fantastic camera for beginners to the photography world! I find the quality of the photos to be amazing, when printed the colours look clear and professional. This is the first Canon i have purchased and only wish i had done so years ago! It is small enough for me to take anywhere i go, i never leave home without it! I have found the different setting to be extremely handy in teaching me how to use the camera properly and get the best picture possible! Love it!

After owning my new "whiz-bang" camera for about a month now, I still know very little about how to use ALL of the amazing settings available. I am a mum of 2 very young kids, and getting the time to sit down & a) read the manual or b) watch an on-line lesson is almost impossible. Maybe by this time next year ill have the camera figured out. On the up-side, I LOVE the portrait setting - i have taken SOOOOOO many absolutely gorgeous pics of my kids. I have even figured out how to use the Manual setting for taking black & white photos, so i am doing well!!
Am absolutely loving my purchase, just wish i could purchase a little extra play-time with my new toy!

Quality, versatility and ease...this camera packs it all in!
Ameture photographer, so don't have much to compare it to, but it's a joy to pick up everytime I need to use it. Has trekked with me to other countries, and the superb resulting images bring each memory back. Can be a little bulky and heavy with time if walking around all day along with 18-55mm & 55-250mm lenses, but minor con compared with what the camera can do.
And the team at Ted's were great as well - very professional and great to deal with.

I purchased a 550D after plenty of research. So there was no surprise with the image quality, as it shares the same sensor as the 7D, 60D and 600D. And the image quality is superb - more than enough pixels and the pixels look fine.
In comparison, the 7D has better build quality (and decent weather resistance) and other features but, like most things, comes at a price. So far, the 550D has held up in various shooting conditions and I don't need high number of frames per second.
All in all, a happy camper.

I have been making professional films for 12 years now and the Canon 550d has proved to be the very best mid range camera I've ever owned. It is fully functional, and superb in low light conditions.
I have used a 5D Mark 2 and a Canon 7D and have found the differences minimal (except for in low light conditions) - but with the right lighting gear and lenses; the HD video and the stills photography can easily be at a professional standard.
The camera's low price range and it's epic functionality make for a ideal camera for independent filmmakers/photographers. It is lightweight and will fit in almost any camera bag.
If only camera's were this good 12 years ago! If I had to criticise the camera I would say that the ISO sensor could be bigger, and the battery life improved. Shooting full HD video chews through the battery, so I suggest buying one or two more batteries. At three batteries I never have a problem when I'm on location.
A great camera, that really brings professional video/stills to a consumer level.
Buy it now.

I received this camera for my 21st birthday. Being an amateur photographer, I wanted something easy to use but still giving me as many options as possible. Soon after receiving it, I went overseas. This camera is amazing. For six weeks I travelled with it and was able to get some great shots all over Europe. The photo quality was superb, and it was so easy to use in any situation. I also loved the video function, which meant I didn't have to bring a separate video camera. I only had to charge the battery probably three times while away, which was great considering I used it everyday. The easy to use settings were also really handy as I could get some great photos at night in front of the Moulin Rouge, inside churches with no flash as well as great scenic shots of the Tuscan mountains and the Swiss Alps. the lenses were fantastic as well, gave me exactly what i needed. Nothing to flashy, but perfect for tourists shots. It was a little bulky to carry around all day, but as long as I had my camera bag it wasn't too bad. It was also a great conversation started with other tourists! I've really enjoyed using this camera and would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking of investing in a DSLR.

As the title says it all, this camera is great for people who are new and would like to have a taste in the photography area. It is quite easy to handle after a few days of exploring it, there are not much of skills needed to handle this camera as it is desgined for ease of use especially for amateaur photographer. The image quality is great although the level of blur is not lessened when shooting in the dark, however, generally it gives really quality. Battery life lasts really long even when video mode is used quite frequently. Basically, it's a great and easy-to-use camera!

This is my first Digital SLR camera, and I couldn't be happier. I feel that I have enough options to play around with the settings to really get creative, and at the same time, can make the camera become fully automated when I'm feeling lazy!
The quality of the photos is fantastic and I couldn't be happier. I just have the standard IS 18-55mm lens, but I'm keen to buy some more so I can continue playing around and being as creative as I like.

This camera was my first SLR after only ever having compact click and shoot cameras. I elected to purchase a quality SLR in anticipation of the birth of my son. What a great decision this was. I have had the privilege of using this camera to take numerous shots of my children. The camera has many pros, including:
1. very easy to use (almost intuitive);
2. the screen is a good size, sharp and clear;
3. the zoom lens provides more than adequate optics;
4. the battery life is very good at many hundreds of photos (in fact I rarely remember to charge the battery);
5. the weight of the camera is quite good for a SLR - I was very conscious of this as my wife was also going to use the camera and she wanted something manageable;
6. the ergonmics of the camera make using the unit easy;
7. vaue for money. While SLRs aren't inexpensive, this particular camera has many features (more than I care to use) at a very competitive price point.
8. most importantly the picture quality is superb and I wish I had purchased an SLR sooner.
Overall I would highly recommend this camera, especially to those wanting to get a start with an SLR.

From the very fast start-up time, to the unforgettable shutter sound when shooting and then the resulting polished image. As an amateur photographer the Canon 550D has lived up to everything I had thought a DSLR should encompass - quality images, beautiful craftmanship/engineering and unprecedented control to the user.
OK, I admit this is my first DSLR, and I'm sure it's not the best on the market, but for me it does everything I want it to and more.
It has a fantastic battery life (I've gone 3 - 4 days of continal use roughly 5-6 hours per day and its survived - no video recording though). Enlarging images without loss of substantial quality is another highlight, especially for landscape images.
I must admit, I'm still getting used to the different types of settings since there is a decent array in the menu, for example finding the right ISO rating or f-stop balance for the image I may be shooting. Furthermore, changing lenses and removing or storing in its bag can get a little cumbersome, however, what it lacks in practicality in this respect it more than makes up for in the resulting crisp images.
One of the best investments I've made - I implore others to take the plunge.

A novice requested from Ted's a camera that was easy to use, and would show what we were seeing in real life. The Canon EOS 550D was recommended and it has done all that and more. Our photos have been sent back to family and friends unable to see what we have, and they are in awe of the standard of photos. It is the camera not the user. Thanks to the staff at Ted's for the advice on what to buy.

I really want to get a longer distance lense for distance shots, but otherwise i love the camera and use it all the time.

For someone at entry level DSLR photography, the 550D is a straightforward camera - easy to use with excellent results. Manual explains everything in step by step language, encouraging the user to move away from the auto settings and explore the true potential of digital photography.

Sports option on this camera is fantastic and caprtures multiple images of excellent quality. The automatic option did not always result in the expected clarity or quality of image. I would prefer to use the other options such as sports, close up etc all of which I found to be great image qulity when used correctly. Camera came with two lenses one for close up and the other for distance at times that was a nuisance, I would recommend purchasing a better quality lens wich does both so you dont need to be changing lenses quite so often.

An excellent camera that is difficult to fault, especially considering it is not top of the range. A swivel screen wouldn't go astray however.

I like this camera as there is no delay when taking pictures. Also the continuous shooting mode is excellent and allows several photos to be recorded before processing the information. Overall I am very happy with the camera and its ease of use.

I have upgraded from a film SLR to this DSLR. A friend (who is a budding photographer) recommended the D550 and a Nikon. As my SLR was a Nikon I was biased towards the Nikon. However after picking up the Nikon & comparing it to the D550 in the weight alone and ease of use I was sold. Since I have taken the D550 everywhere and shot everything from stage action to scenery. The video function is also pretty handy. This is a brilliant camera for the novice who wants to get a little bit dangerous!

I am very happy with my camera, it is much larger than what I have had previously, I soon became used to all the features of the camera and was able to take lots of good shots.
I like being able to crop and enlarge some photos, take an individual out of a photo and make a portrait. The quality of the photo is still very good.

My first DSLR and I couldn't be happier with it. Very easy to use and full of features. The auto functions are amazing especially shots at night with no flash.
